Chef Paul Mach, assistant professor of hospitality management/culinary arts at Pennsylvania College of Technology, recently earned the Certified Specialist of Wine credential from the Society of Wine Educators. The Society of Wine Educators validates wine knowledge, tasting acumen and teaching ability within its certifications.

Pennsylvania College of Technology students will use Harry Potter as the inspiration for their three-tier cake designs during the college's sixth-annual cake competition. Following judging, the students' cakes will be displayed for the public from 1-3 p.m. March 3 and from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 4 in the Mountain Laurel Room of the Thompson Professional Development Center.

Students Zachary D. Derck, a culinary arts and systems student from Northumberland, and Jordan T. Homet, a culinary arts technology student from Granville Summit, recently were provided a back-scenes White House tour by a military representative. The students were accompanied by Samuel A. Morgante, executive chef of Dining Services at Penn College and a former Navy and White House chef.

Katrina M. Snelgrove, a baking and pastry arts student at Pennsylvania College of Technology, was recently named a finalist in a national chocolate-dessert competition sponsored by Barry Callebaut, the world's leading manufacturer of high-quality cocoa and chocolate products.

Pennsylvania College of Technology announced the winners of its annual Food Show, which included a chocolate house auction that raised $1,600 for the Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity. The Food Show included about 80 entries from students in seven advanced culinary arts and baking and pastry arts courses, and all seven courses were judged by culinary arts professionals from across the region.

Two Pennsylvania College of Technology students earned first-place honors in the final round of America's Best Raisin Bread Contest, held at the American Institute of Baking in Manhattan, Kan., Oct. 14-16. The School of Hospitality hosted Austrian wine expert Andreas Wickhoff on Penn College's main campus this week. Throughout his stay, Wickhoff talked with classes about wine pairing and the flavors and origins of Austrian wine. Wickhoff, managing director of Premium Estates of Austria, travels the world to promote wines of Austria's top producers.

The family of a Pennsylvania College of Technology alumna who was a well-known pastry chef in Williamsport has established a scholarship fund at the college in her memory. The Barbara Johnson Memorial Pastry Arts Scholarship will provide annual awards to students in Penn College's baking and pastry arts associate-degree major.

Three Pennsylvania College of Technology students are among nine college students from across the nation who were selected to compete in the final bake-off of the third annual America's Best Raisin Bread Contest. Terri A. Smith, a baking and pastry arts student from Hatfield, created a recipe called Spiced Raisin Naan that was accepted for production in the Student Artisan category. Kacy L.

Students from Pennsylvania College of Technology will serve food samples made with fresh, local ingredients at the Williamsport Outdoor Growers Market on Oct. 23. The students, all enrolled in the college's Catering course, will offer cooking demonstrations and samples from 8 a.m. to noon. Student managers for the event are Michele D.
