Penn College spotlight on sports

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior Gavin Barrett of Roselle, New Jersey, was named to the D3Hoops.com District 4 All-Region third team, it was announced on Thursday. Barrett becomes the college’s first men's basketball player in the NCAA era (since 2014) to earn all-region honors.

No stranger to making program history, Barrett was the first player to earn a United East Conference first-team selection as a sophomore and the first to earn that honor in back-to-back seasons when he was named to the first team this season. He led NCAA Division III in assists per game (7.7) and triple-doubles (2) this season while he tied for second in the division with a 1.7 assist-to-turnover ratio and sixth in scoring (16.9 ppg). Barrett recorded his triple-doubles in back-to-back games against Gallaudet (15 points, 16 assists, 10 rebounds) and Penn State Berks (22 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) and scored his 1,000th career point against Gallaudet on Jan. 20.

SOFTBALL
Hosting Rosemont College on Friday, the Wildcats posted a sweep by scores of 10-5 and 9-1. In the opener, Ivvy Morder of Mechanicsburg had two hits and plated three runs. Lexi Snyder of Hegins had three hits and drove in two runs to back the nine-strikeout pitching effort of Mackenzie Weaver of Montoursville. In the nightcap, Hailey DeBrody of Cogan Station threw a five-inning two-hitter and got run support from Morder, who went 2 for 3 — including the 100th hit of her career — with three RBIs; Jesse Brumbaugh of McClure, who was 2 for 2 with two RBIs; and Madison Herriman of Danville, who was 3 for 3 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Hosting Penn State Altoona on Saturday, Penn College split, losing 7-6 in eight innings and winning 3-2 in seven innings. In the first game, the Wildcats fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, rallied with a six-run fourth and then were outscored 4-0 the rest of the way. The winning run scored in the eighth after a wild pitch and fielding error. On the mound, Weaver took the loss. Grace Lorson of Williamsport led the offense with three hits. In the second game, Margaret Mangene of Boalsburg scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh after she singled, advanced on a single by Brumbaugh and scored on an Altoona error. Weaver got the pitching win with 2/3 innings of perfect relief after DeBrody went the first 6.1 innings. Brumbaugh had two of her team’s four hits, including a solo homer.

Earlier in the week, Weaver was named the United East Volt Division Pitcher of the Week (March 4-10)  for the fourth time in her career.

The reigning UE Pitcher of the Year started 2024 strong with a 3-2 record at the Spring Break Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She collected 36 strikeouts in 31 innings and held opposing hitters to a .197 batting average. During the week, she became just the third Wildcat in program history to reach 300 career strikeouts.

BASEBALL
At Juniata College on Thursday, after being held to two hits and falling behind 5-0 through seven innings, the Wildcats knotted the score with a five-run eighth — highlighted by Quinn Hanafin’s three-run homer — before the home team scored in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-5 win.

Opening United East action at Lancaster Bible College on Friday in the first of a two-day, three-game series, Penn College led 6-3 after six innings but got outscored 8-4 the rest of the way — with four of the runs coming on a grand-slam home run in the bottom of the eighth — in an 11-10 loss. Dallas Griess of Williamsport went 4 for 5, including two triples and a double, with four runs scored for the Wildcats, while Hanafin of Sayre ended with three runs batted in.

In Saturday’s twin bill at Lancaster Bible, Penn College lost 3-2 in seven innings and 10-0 in eight innings. In the opener, Griess went 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored and Shawn Townsend of Hatboro went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. In the second game, Jaiden Augustine of Dillsburg finished 2 for 3.

MEN’S LACROSSE
After falling behind Immaculata University 7-3 in the second quarter, Penn College evened the score at 8-all in the third frame before losing 11-9. Aidan McFalls of Gilbertsville led the Wildcats with four goals and two assists, while AJ Dotson of Wilmington, Delaware, had two goals and two assists. Penn College had 24 shots on goal, with McFalls taking 14, while Immaculata had 22.

MEN’S/WOMEN’S TENNIS
Penn College’s spring tennis season got underway on Saturday at home against King’s College, with the women losing 7-2 and the men falling 8-1.

Winning for the women were Lauren Peck of South Williamsport at No. 2 singles and Faith Murray (Dillsburg)-Georgia Macensky (Wellsboro) at No. 2 doubles. On the men’s side, Logan Ogden of South Williamsport picked up the lone win at No. 4 singles.
