Penn College cross-country runners close out season

During season-ending races on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Cross-Country Championships in Newville, the Pennsylvania College of Technology men placed 27th and the women 30th. Individually for the Wildcats, Alec Rees was 149th for the men and Cinnamon Digan was 190th for the women.
Rees, of Centerport, New York, completed the 8K men’s course in 30:58.2; Dean Fulton, of Palmyra, was 154th in 31:18.8; Nick Snow, of York, was 184th in 32:58.1; Will Deem, of Furlong, was 202nd in 35:10.2; and Chad Bomboy, of Unityville, was 213th in 36:46.0.
Digan, of Mifflinburg, ran the 6K women’s course in 30:40.8; Taylor Schon, of Selinsgrove, was 198th in 31:42.8; Teagan Willey, of Towanda, was 199th in 31:43.0; Kristina Mease, of Richlandtown, was 204th in 32:59.9; and Charlee Marshall, of Snow Shoe, was 209th in 35:49.7. The latter three also competed on the women’s soccer team this fall.
Carnegie Mellon took the men’s title in a 31-team field with 30 points, while Dickinson College’s Christopher Scharf was the winner in a 222-runner field with a time of 25:51.6.
In women’s action, Johns Hopkins won the crown in a 31-team field with 20 points, while Dickinson’s Isabel Cardi was the top finisher in a 216-runner field with a time of 22:13.0.
"We saw some of the worst racing conditions you can possibly compete in," coach Nick Patton said. "It was rainy, windy and muddy, which made the course slow and tough to navigate. When you race in those conditions, it's easy to let them get in the way and affect your performance. This team didn't do that.
"Both teams went out and competed to the best of their abilities. I'm very impressed with the grit and determination we showed. Both teams have a lot to be proud of with the way they competed. I know I am one proud coach."
Men’s basketball
In their nonconference season opener Friday in the Crosstown Challenge, the Wildcats lost, 77-57, to McDaniel College. McDaniel opened a six-point halftime lead and pulled away from there in the second half. Corey Blackwell, of Hammonton, New Jersey, and Max Jackowsky, of Garnet Valley, each scored 13 points for Penn College, and Obens Luxama, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, added 12 points. Blackwell also led with eight rebounds.
Saturday’s scheduled home game against Pitt-Greensburg was canceled.
Women’s basketball
After a slow start on offense, Penn College battled on even terms in the second half at Elmira (N.Y.) College in the nonconference season opener for both teams on Wednesday, only to fall, 72-57. Ja’Quela Dyer, of Dover, Delaware, led the Wildcats with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Rachel Teats, of Middleburg, added 12 points. Penn College made just one of 12 3-point shots during the game.
On Saturday in nonconference play at King’s College, the Wildcats were outscored 63-25 over the last three quarters in a 75-37 loss that dropped them to 0-2. Cassi Kuhns, of Loyalsock Township, was the lone Penn College player scoring in double figures with 12 points. Kuhns and Dyer each had six rebounds. King’s forced 35 turnovers that led to 45 of its points.

The fall iRacing season ended on Tuesday with a 15th-place finish in a field of 39.
