Students to Serve Samples, Carve Pumpkins at Growers Market

Students from Pennsylvania College of Technology will offer a pumpkin-carving demonstration competition-style and serve food samples made with fresh, local ingredients during "Customer Appreciation Day" at the Williamsport Outdoor Growers Market on Oct. 22.

Students enrolled in the college's Catering course will offer cooking demonstrations and samples beginning at 8 a.m. Student managers for the event are Cassandra R. Brochu, of South Williamsport; Arthur H. Byra, of East Stroudsburg; and Jordan T. Homet, of Granville Summit.

Ingredients for the students' demonstrations and samples are donated by vendors at the market.

The college's Catering course visits the market annually. The event offers students not only a chance to practice their skills in planning a menu and ordering and organizing supplies for an off-site event, but it also provides them a chance to interact with food producers and work with fresh, nutritious ingredients.

The Growers Market is one of several real-world events the class will cater during the fall semester. The students will prepare food at the market from 8 a.m. to around noon (until samples run out).

Another 12 students will participate in a pumpkin-carving contest at 9:30 a.m., with judging and an award to be presented by the Williamsport Growers Association at 11 a.m.

The Growers Market is held Saturdays at municipal parking lot G, bounded by Fifth, Hepburn and Pine streets and Little League Boulevard.
