Pennsylvania College of Technology students will use Harry Potter as the inspiration for their three-tier cake designs during the college's sixth-annual cake competition.

Following judging, the students' cakes will be displayed for the public from 1-3 p.m. March 3 and from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. March 4 in the Mountain Laurel Room of the Thompson Professional Development Center. Following the Cake Competition Display, the cakes will be moved to the college's Madigan Library as part of the citywide "Harry Potter's World" exhibit.

The cake competition is sponsored by CalJava International, a manufacturer of ready-to-use gum-paste decorations, and was conceived by CalJava founder and owner Daniel Budiman after he visited the campus.

Each cake is covered with fondant and judged carefully based on aesthetics, technique and difficulty.

Fourteen students enrolled in an advanced cake-decorating course taught by Suzann L. Major, assistant professor of baking and pastry arts/culinary arts will compete for prizes sponsored by CalJava International.

Those who visit the display may donate cash to cast votes for the People's Choice Award winner. The money will be given to the Williamsport YWCA's Liberty House, which provides rooms for homeless women (and women with children) and programs to assist them in becoming self-sufficient.
