Penn College Teams Headed Into Conference Playoffs

Although details have yet to be announced, three Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports teams will be in Penn State University Athletic Conference playoff action this week. On Tuesday, the women's volleyball team steps into action and, on Saturday, the cross-country and coed tennis teams will look to defend their championships. As the top seed, the men's soccer team gets a first-round bye until Oct. 27.

FLASHBACK Over the past week, Wildcat teams posted a combined 21 wins and eight losses.

Cross-Country On Saturday at Luzerne County Community College, the Penn College men finished first in a seven-team field and Jake Shedden (Canton) set a new 8K course record in 25:39. For the Penn College women, Tamara Pavlov finished second. For the third week in a row, a Penn College athlete was honored by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association as Shedden was named cross-country Player of the Week for his record-setting effort Oct. 9 at the Albright Invitational, where he set an 8K course mark in 27:27.

Golf Penn College golfers rallied Tuesday to finish second in the Penn State University Athletic Conference championships and fifth in the United States Collegiate Athletic Conference national tournament.

Over two days on the par 72, 6,686-yard Penn State University Blue Course, the Wildcats recorded scores of 326-328 for a 654 total to finish behind Penn State Mont Alto's 646 in PSUAC action and Rochester College's 625 in USCAA play.

Individually for Penn College, senior Eric Schall (Jersey Shore) tied for 13th place with back-to-back 79s. Ben Hunter of the Apprentice School in Newport News, Va., finished first with a 70-74-144. Also for Penn College, senior Dean Bell (Schwenksville) tied for 30th with a 81-84-165, sophomore Dan Kramer (Avon, Conn.) tied for 37th with a 81-88-169, junior Kurt Linhart (Zionsville) tied for 45th with an 85-87-172 and freshmen Chad Vuocolo (Lock Haven) and Alex Howe (Lake Ariel) tied for 48th, Vuocolo on rounds of 91-82 and Howe on rounds of 90-83. The low four scores were used to determine team totals.

"Overall, it was a total team effort. They worked hard and it was good to see our two seniors finish in the top 10 (in PSUAC play). Overall, it was a success," said second-year coach Matt Haile.

For the season, Penn College was 18-3 in the conference and 20-6 overall.

Men's Soccer On Saturday, Chris Brennan (New Hope) scored two goals in a 3-1 win over Penn State York as the Wildcats improved to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in the PSUAC. Penn College leads the PSUAC standings and was ranked No. 4 in the most recent USCAA Coaches' poll.

Women's Soccer Kim Daley (Springfield Center) scored three goals in a 4-0 win over the Elmira (N.Y.) College Jayvee squad on Monday. The Wildcats outshot their foes, 20-2. On Wednesday against NCAA Division III Susquehanna, Penn College lost, 8-0, and, on Saturday, the Wildcats lost to Alfred (N.Y.) University, 6-0. Penn College was outshot 33-2 as it fell to 5-6 overall.

Team Tennis A 5-4 loss at York on Tuesday snapped a seven-match win streak for the Wildcats. Winning in both singles and doubles were Rob Kemrer (Milton) and Danielle Trout (Harrisburg). The team rebounded Saturday with a 9-0 win over Penn State Wilkes-Barre in which Kemrer, Trout, Shane Burridge (Ephrata) and Rachel Emmons (Washington, N.J.) all won in singles and doubles as the team improved to 8-3 overall and in the PSUAC.

Women's Volleyball On Oct. 10 at New Kensington, the Wildcats split, losing to Penn State Fayette, 2-3, and beating the host team, 3-0. Thursday, Penn College knocked off Penn State Brandywine, 3-0, and, on Saturday, the team closed out its regular season with a pair of 3-0 wins over Penn State Scranton and Penn State DuBois to go to 16-6 overall and 13-3 in the PSUAC. Going into Saturday's matches, the Wildcats were fourth in the PSUAC and No. 16 in the most recent USCAA Coaches' poll.
