Two Pennsylvania College of Technology students each have been awarded $2,500 scholarships from the Electrical Generating Systems Association, the eighth straight year in which at least one honoree has been chosen from the institution.

Among the 12 David I. Coren Memorial Scholarship winners for the 2010-11 year are Timothy E. Funk, of Paradise; and Jason M. Hirtzel, of Williamsport.

Funk, who holds associate degrees in diesel technology and electric power generation technology, is pursuing a bachelor's degree in technology management. Hirtzel one of last year's scholarship recipients, as well is enrolled in the two-year on-site power generation major and interns for Williams Gas Pipeline, a natural gas transportation company.

"The fact that our students are consistently awarded this scholarship indicates that the EGSA organization, and industry as a whole, recognizes the quality education our students are receiving," said Mary A. Sullivan, dean of natural resources management.

Penn College's on-site power generation major is offered cooperatively through the School of Natural Resources Management at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center near Allenwood and the School of Construction and Design Technologies on the college's main campus in Williamsport. It offers students the opportunity to develop skills needed to install, maintain, diagnose and service on-site power-generation units.

The David I. Coren Scholarship Program was established to provide financial assistance to students who plan to seek employment in the power-generation industry upon graduation. The program memorializes a former executive at Zenith Controls and a leader within EGSA, who died in 2000.
