Chocolate House Auction to Benefit Habitat for Humanity

Pennsylvania College of Technology's annual "House for a Home" chocolate house auction which benefits Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity is scheduled for Dec. 5 during the School of Hospitality's annual Food Show.

Students enrolled in the Principles of Chocolate Works course taught by Chef Charles R. Niedermyer, instructor of baking and pastry arts/culinary arts, began building their chocolate structures at the end of October. Visitors can view and place silent bids on the houses during the Food Show from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. High bidders will be announced at 1 p.m.

Following, at 1:15 p.m., a live auction of student-created holiday treats all packaged and ready for holiday parties will be hosted by auctioneer Scott Younkin, of Linden, to add funds to the Habitat for Humanity donation. Offerings include chocolate boxes, assorted truffles, gingerbread houses, yule logs, assorted cookie trays, decorated cakes and more.

The public is invited to participate in the silent auction and the live auction, both to be held on campus in the Thompson Professional Development Center, Mountain Laurel Room. Last year's event raised nearly $1,600 for the local charity.

Chocolate-home builders are: Melissa M. Balduino, of Washington, N.J.; Kimberly J. Caputzal, of Lebanon; Kathleen A. Garrison, of Flanders, N.J.; Emily M. Helmick, of Friedens; Akacia Klick, of Kingston; Skylar D. Kline, of McClure; Derek J. Long, of Mifflinburg; Cheryl D. Martin, of South Williamsport; Kathleen E. Mills, of Lewisburg; Trent S. Musheno, of Montoursville; Hillary E. Reitz, of Williamsport; Allyson J. Roan, of Pennsylvania Furnace; Shannon N. Stalfort, of York; and Ashley M. Wolfe, of South Williamsport.

Also displayed during the Food Show will be final projects from students in advanced courses including Cakes and Decorations, Advanced Garde Manger, Classical and Specialty Desserts, Artistic Buffet Decoration, and Classical Cuisines of the World. The projects will be judged by some of the region's top chefs.
