Penn College Alumnus Killed in Baghdad

Sean Michael ThomasThe Penn College community joins in tribute to Army National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Sean Michael Thomas, an alumnus who was killed in a rocket explosion inIraq on Tuesday. Thomas, a 1992 graduate of Hughesville High School, was a member of the Wildcat tennis team and earned an associate degree in general studies at Penn College in May 1995. Thomas was a "great kid and always had a smile on his face," remembers Carl L. Shaner, Student Health Center director, a high school classmate. He characterized Hughesville as a "small community with a big loss," noting that Thomas frequently returned to the local elementary and high schools in support of students. Thomas was a unit supply superintendent assigned to the 28th Joint Area Support Group in Harrisburg, andwas stationed in Baghdad's Green Zonewith the 28th Infantry Division. The college community offers its condolences to Thomas' family, which includes a wife and 6-month-old daughter.
