'Cat Tales Men's Basketball The third time was not a charm for the Wildcat men against Penn State New Kensington, as their winningest season ever ended with a first-round loss in the Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference playoffs.
Penn College had dropped its two regular-season games against Penn State New Kensington, but was tied at halftime in the third encounter between the two before falling.
Ken Vialet (Manhattan, N.Y.) topped the Wildcats with 23 points during the game and Dawan Moore (Buffalo, N.Y.) added 17. Aaron Knight, a 6-foot-4 freshman from Monroeville, led Penn State New Kensington (14-12 overall) with a game-high 24 points.
For the season, Vialet scored 332 points, an average of 18.4 per game; Moore scored 308, an average of 12.8, and Tony Flint (Port Allegany) scored 227, an average of 10.3.
Before Saturday's game, Penn College coach Gene Bruno said, "(In eight years), this is the most fun I've had because it's a great group of kids, they've jelled together, they play as a team. . . . Overall . . . it's been a great season. We've elevated our schedule. And what's most exciting is that they're getting it done in the classroom. Other than Greg Davis (Kutztown) and Joe Walker (Williamsport), everybody's back, which should make us only better (next year).
"It's been a good year. We won two overtime games, had a stretch where we won eight of nine, including five in a row, and posted our most wins in a single year. My assistant, Matt Johnson, has been a big part of that success. We work well together. I stress teamwork to all of my teams and what better way to teach it than leading by example," Bruno added.
