In May 2023, students residing in The Village, Pennsylvania College of Technology's student residence complex, will open a time capsule and discover numerous artifacts buried there 25 years earlier in May 1998.
Since 1997-98 was the first full academic year students have lived at The Village, students of The Village Council, the organization that represents the residents and plans social activities, conceived the idea of placing various memorabilia in a time capsule and burying the element in the complex's courtyard.
The time capsule will be dedicated Friday, May 1, at 3 p.m.
Among the items to be placed in the time capsule include Village construction photos, newspaper clippings, a Bistro menu (The Bistro is a campus eatery), photographs of Village students from the 1997-98 academic year, and a list of the popular music and fads from 1998, along with a timeline of the year's events and a list of incurable diseases as of 1998.
The time capsule was designed and constructed for the project by James A. Potter II, instructor of building construction technology, and construction students. To place over the buried time capsule, the Village Council purchased a headstone that reads: "Village Time Capsule, Dedicated May 1, 1998, To Be Opened May 2023."
The students are dedicating the time capsule in the memory of Joseph DeFeo, a student who died in early April. DeFeo, of Budd Lake, N.J., was a building construction technology student and president of The Village Council.
