A new course in visual literacy was highlighted by two Pennsylvania College of Technology graphic design faculty members – Brian A. Flynn and David M. Moyer – at the 55th Annual Conference of the International Visual Literacy Association, hosted recently online and in person by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

A renowned printmaker whose multicolor intaglio prints are in museums around the world is sharing his work through Dec. 1 in The Gallery at Penn College. Yuji Hiratsuka’s “Retro Urban Mode” exhibit showcases his whimsical and satirical images, crafted with his unique technique of chine collé with etching. He will also offer an artist’s talk via Zoom at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9. Registration is required and can be made at the gallery website.

Students in Matthew A. Francis' Construction Hand & Power Tools course are in the midst of replacing the circular benches around four Zelkova trees in front of the Klump Academic Center. "The years have taken their toll on the wood seating areas, and safety was a concern," said General Services' Chad L. Karstetter, horticulturist/grounds and motorpool manager. "We reached out to Matt and his BTC103 classes with an idea, and they accepted the challenge to revive that area. They are doing an awesome job."

Pennsylvania College of Technology’s radiography program celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Oct. 18 with a show of pink – the color designated for bringing attention to breast cancer and early detection of the disease. Earning a degree in radiography is the first step to becoming a mammographer (a mammogram is an X-ray that allows a radiologist to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas) – one of several advanced modalities in the medical imaging field.

Pennsylvania College of Technology manufacturing students will benefit from a new machine provided at a discounted rate by a worldwide leader in tool measuring, inspection and management technology. Approximately 100 students per year seeking two- and four-year manufacturing-related degrees will use the ZOLLER smile Pilot 4.0 presetter, provided by ZOLLER Inc. Valued at $44,482.50, the company sold the equipment – including a software upgrade and full options package – to the college for $15,850.

Carl J. Bower Jr., assistant professor of horticulture, and 17 of his students traveled to Longwood Gardens on Wednesday, a trip that included a visit with alumna Lauren S. Hoderny-Hill. The manager of domestic and international studies at the botanical showcase in Kennett Square, she is a 2005 graduate in floral design/interior plantscape.

A Wednesday afternoon ribbon-cutting made it official: Clubhouse Concessions LLC, the first student-run enterprise at Pennsylvania College of Technology, is open for business! Begun by Jason Wiedl, a construction management student from West Pittston, the food truck will be set up from 8 p.m.-2 a.m. Thursdays to Saturdays at West Third and Susquehanna streets. Its start-up menu offers sliders, hot dogs, music and cornhole.

Career Services held its final major-specific Recruitment Day of the semester on Wednesday, as more than a dozen companies filled the Breuder Advanced Technology & Health Services Center atrium to talk with students and alumni about career opportunities in the plastics and polymer field. Penn College's Recruitment Days are narrowly tailored to particular programs, with smaller numbers of vendors – but with no less enthusiasm about discussing internships and full-and part-time jobs.

A PPG Industries Inc. training instructor, renowned for his custom paint artistry, shared decades' worth of expertise this week with Penn College students, faculty and career and technical education instructors. Paul Stoll – who last visited campus during the Air Affair East showcase in May 2007 – began Wednesday with a basic airbrush class.

Penn College observed National Hispanic Heritage Month during a Tuesday event in the Bush Campus Center for students, employees and community members. Following the same "Lunch and Learn" format as a Juneteenth program in late spring, the afternoon included speakers, a catered meal and the chance to cross-culturally engage one another in pursuit of common goals.
