State grant supports training, outreach for campus safety

The state Department of Education has awarded Pennsylvania College of Technology $39,470 for the project “It’s On Us – A Call to Wildcats,” a comprehensive initiative to offer training and awareness on the prevention of sexual misconduct.
The college’s effort is part of the “It’s On Us PA” statewide campaign that invites everyone to play a role in ending sexual assault. The initiatives are building off the momentum of the national “It’s On Us” movement, seeking to combat campus sexual assault and harassment by educating and empowering campus communities in creating a culture of prevention.
“Penn College is grateful for Pennsylvania’s ‘It’s On Us’ grant. These funds are focused on improving awareness and training for the prevention of sexual, dating and domestic violence, as well as stalking,” said Tanya Berfield, director of student advocacy and Title IX coordinator. “This investment in both staff and students allows us to build a culture of safety, respect and empathy, which furthers our goal of developing a well-rounded workforce.”
Funds are being utilized for a range of technical and professional services and supplies. The college partners with community and student organizations to conduct training and host events designed to prioritize the physical and emotional well-being of students and foster an environment of respect.
Programming supported includes: “Take Back the Night,” “Purple Thursday Vigil,” “Love Yourself, Love Your Partner,” “Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” “Sexual Assault Awareness Month,” “Denim Day,” “Unhealthy and Healthy Relationships,” and “Bystander Intervention and Survivor Support.”
