Penn College designs capture awards, Best of Show honors
The graphic design talents of four students and seven alumni from Pennsylvania College of Technology have been honored in two prestigious design competitions. In both contests, Penn College designs captured Best of Show awards.
In the 2021-22 American Advertising Federation of Northeast Pennsylvania’s Student American Advertising Awards, John J. Grochowski, of Saylorsburg, won Best of Show for his “Braunbär Trinken Oktoberfest” design.
Also announced recently were winners in the 2021 Flux Student Design Competition where Ashley Tate, of Lewisburg, won Best of Show for “Hello Period” (Social Awareness Campaign).
Grochowski and Tate graduated from Penn College in May 2021 with Bachelor of Science degrees in graphic design. Their designs were created during their senior year.
Penn College students swept the honors in the AAF NEPA’s Student American Advertising Awards.
In addition to his Best of Show, Grochowski won a gold award for “Braunbär Trinken Oktoberfest.” Also capturing a gold was Maya Wynant, of Honey Brook, for “Rabbit’s Foot Beer Works Packaging.”
Silver honors were awarded to Paulina N. Greenland, of State College, for “Moxi Spice Co.”; Kaylee N. Masullo, of Bellefonte, for “Hobby Box”; Joey M. Morrin, of Morrisville, for “Qeb Food Packaging”; and Elias D. Ritter, of Willow Grove, for “Grind Coffee Co. Packaging.”
Greenland, Massullo and Morrin also graduated in May 2021. Wynant and Ritter are seniors who have petitioned to graduate in May 2022.
All will advance to the district-level competition, vying with entries from Delaware; Maryland; New Jersey; New York; Pennsylvania; and Washington, D.C. A national competition follows.
AAF’s Student American Advertising Awards Competition, part of its American Advertising Awards, is a national program honoring students and recognizing excellence in the art of advertising. The American Advertising Awards is the largest creative awards competition in the advertising industry.
Sponsored by AIGA Blue Ridge, a chapter of the national AIGA organization, the Flux Student Design Competition also awarded Tate a Best of Category award in Social Impact Design for “Hello Period” (Social Awareness Campaign).
Masullo captured a Best of Category award in Packaging for “Seven Years Bad Luck Beer Packaging.”
Also recognized in the Packaging category was Kaylee A. Smith, of East Stroudsburg, for “VII Years Bad Luck Brewing.”
Earning Flux awards in the Branding category were Tyler W. Miller, of Montgomery, for “Bright Mountain Identity,” and Ashley Dawnn Thomas Johnson, of Roselle, New Jersey, for “Stonebridge Cooperative School Branding.”
Emma Marie Mercer, of Williamsport, was honored in the Publication category for “Au Courant Magazine Cover and Feature.”
Smith and Miller graduated in May 2021. Thomas Johnson and Mercer have petitioned to graduate in May 2022.
The Flux competition celebrates the best creative work produced each year by U.S. undergraduate and graduate students. AIGA is a professional organization for design founded in 1914 as the American Institute of Graphic Arts. AIGA Blue Ridge receives competition submissions from colleges and universities in a broad range of states, from Texas to Connecticut.
Penn College graphic design students and alumni have consistently earned recognition through their submissions to regional, national and international advertising design competitions.
“Graphic Design 2022,” the annual portfolio exhibition for seniors, is on display in The Gallery at Penn College through May 6. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
