Penn College Golfers Seek Continued Success

Coming off its best season ever in North Eastern Athletic Conference play with a third-place finish in the spring – and with three returning all-conference players and another who ended in the top 20 – Pennsylvania College of Technology golf coach Matt Haile has plenty to be optimistic about as he enters his 10th season. The Wildcats open their fall season Wednesday at the Keuka College Invitational.
The key returning players are junior Austin Moscariello, of New Columbia, and senior Ned Baumbach, of Elizabethtown, who ended tied for fifth place and were awarded First and Second Team honors, respectively; sophomore Brian Whelan, of Cresco, who tied for 14th and was a Third Team NEAC honoree; and sophomore Eli Dyer, of Wallingford, Connecticut, who tied for 20th.
The Wildcats also return fifth-year senior Tyler Marks, of Beachwood, New Jersey; junior Matt Ciccone, of Doylestown; and sophomore Dan Pivirotto, of State College, who bring added experience to the squad, and welcome newcomers Sean McNamara, of Lancaster, a sophomore transfer student from Wilkes University, and freshmen Tyler Haynes, of Hummelstown, and Austin Tiesi, of Cherry Tree.
“Each practice, we stress taking it one day at a time and learning from our previous mistakes. … It’s keeping a positive attitude and positive outlook for the upcoming season and ultimately the spring championships,” Haile said.
“Building upon the success we had last year, and the fact that we have a veteran team with experience and the playing ability to come out on top, hopefully we can have a good, successful fall season and bounce back quickly in the spring,” the coach continued.
On a yearly basis, other than helping his freshmen transition from the high school to college workload while competing in athletics, Haile spends much of his time focusing on course management and playing smarter shots.
“When you get in trouble, you’ve got to get (the ball) back in play and reset. … We’re trying to eliminate the big gaps between a good round and a bad round. … We’re working toward being more consistent in closing that gap with their scoring. … To be competitive in our conference, we need to have multiple guys in the upper 70s to low 80s,” Haile added.

At Keystone College in nonconference play on Wednesday, the Wildcats dropped a 4-0 decision with three of the home team’s goals coming in the second half. Keystone led in shots, 25-6 (14-3 on goal), and corner kicks, 8-4.
Squaring off at home in its NEAC opener against defending champion Penn State Abington on Saturday, Penn College played tough but lost 3-2 in overtime to fall to 0-3 overall. The Wildcats led 2-0 on goals from Chris McFarland, of Coatesville, and Seth Bilbie, of Shrewsbury, before Abington battled back to force OT and win with a goal at 93:34. Abington led in shots, 17-11 (8-5 on goal), and in corner kicks, 9-4. Penn College sophomore goal keeper Brendan Skwirut, of Austin, went the distance and had five saves on the day.
On Sunday, the Wildcats traveled to Pitt-Greensburg for a nonconference match, only to find out when they arrived that it had been postponed. According to coach Tyler Mensch, rescheduling is “TBD, but highly doubtful.”

Hosting Penn State Abington in its NEAC opener on Saturday, Penn College posted a 6-0 shutout that improved its overall record to 2-0. Leading the offense for the Wildcats were Kaelan Cronan, of Leesport, and Morgan Brooks, of Bellefonte, who scored two goals each. Penn College led in shots, 24-3 (14-3 on goal), and in corner kicks, 5-2. Charlee Marshall, of Snow Shoe, and Taylor Gonzales, of Lititz, split time in goal with Marshall coming away with two saves and Gonzales one.
