Hands-on science fun is the focus of an evening designed for local families on Thursday, Feb. 16, in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Field House.
The college will team up with Lycoming College and the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce to offer the city’s sixth annual Science Festival from 5 to 8 p.m.
The event features hands-on activities geared toward elementary and middle school students and their families, presented by local businesses and organizations, including school and college-affiliated groups. The event is intended to make learning fun and to stimulate children’s interest in math, science and exciting careers in related fields.
Also hosting activities are the Carnegie Science Center, of Pittsburgh, and the Society of Plastics Engineers’ PlastiVan program.
The Carnegie Science Center will present “Grand Slam Science,” which explores the science behind America’s favorite pastime, from the physics behind pitches, to measuring reaction time and predicting a ball’s trajectory. The presentation is funded by a grant from Williams Transco Atlantic Sunrise Project to the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce.
The PlastiVan program travels to schools and companies throughout North America, educating people of all ages about the chemistry, history, processing, manufacturing, sustainability and application of plastics, all through exciting hands-on experiences that spark scientific curiosity. The PlastiVan’s visit is sponsored by thermoplastics firm Sekisui SPI, of Bloomsburg.
During the day, more than 1,500 fifth-graders from 11 area school districts will visit campus, where they’ll rotate through the “Grand Slam Science” program, a “Taste of Technology” presentation by Penn College’s School of Business & Hospitality, and hands-on activities – including the PlastiVan – in the Field House.
On-campus coordination for the Science Festival is being handled by Penn College’s College Transitions Office. The festival is paid for by the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce, Lycoming College and Penn College, with additional underwriting from Chief Oil & Gas, UPMC Susquehanna, L3 Communications, and Southwestern Energy.
The local Science Festival is a satellite event for the USA Science & Engineering Festival, the nation’s largest celebration of all things science and engineering.
The snow date for the event is Feb. 23.
