Penn College Hosting ‘Fall Brawl 2016’ Robotic Design Competition

A student group at Pennsylvania College of Technology is inviting community members to join the fight by participating in “Fall Brawl 2016” on Oct. 22. The event will feature small robots engaging in big battles for bragging rights.
Sponsored by the Student Wildcats of Robotic Design, the competition encourages participants to design, fabricate and test “beetleweight” robots (maximum of three pounds) before engaging in “combat” to determine the toughest bot.
The knockout-style tournament guarantees each robot at least three “fights.” A single-elimination bracket will determine the winner.
“This is a great event for our students, who are able to employ their technical expertise for a fun competition,” said David A. Probst, assistant professor of engineering design technology and co-adviser to the S.W.O.R.D. club. “We are really excited to invite the community to not only come and watch the event but also participate in it.”
More than 25 Penn College students are expected to compete. Majors represented by the students include electronics and computer engineering technology, manufacturing engineering technology, welding technology, electronics and computer engineering technology: robotics and automation emphasis, information technology: network specialist concentration, engineering CAD technology, and plastics and polymer technology.
The “arena” for Fall Brawl 2016 will be the Field House, located on Penn College’s main campus in Williamsport. Robot safety checks will begin at 9 a.m. on Oct. 22, with the competition scheduled for 10 a.m. According to Probst, non-monetary prizes will be offered.
Rules and registration information is available from the S.W.O.R.D. club. The entry fee is $20 per robot. Questions can be emailed.
