Two alumni of Pennsylvania College of Technology’s immediate predecessor institution have established a scholarship honoring Daniel J. Doyle, professor emeritus of history and a former administrator at the college.
Darryl and Dawn (Wahler) Kehrer, both 1972 liberal arts graduates of Williamsport Area Community College, have endowed a scholarship in honor of Doyle.
“The annual award is an enduring way to honor Dan Doyle's nearly four decades of commitment to Penn College students,” Darryl Kehrer said.
Doyle, who holds a Ph.D. from St. John’s University, received the highest honor for faculty at Penn College, the Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award, in 1984. He taught full time at the college from 1967 to 2005. In 2003, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant, teaching in Egypt. In the 1980s, Doyle chaired the committee conducting the self-study for the Middle States Association Commission on Higher Education accreditation process at Penn College. He also served as director of integrated studies at the college from 1985-88.
Darryl Kehrer, who holds a Master of Public Administration, is a retired staff director of the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, U.S. House of Representatives. For 34 years, he contributed to writing U.S. policies affecting military veterans.
In November, he visited campus and presented “Penn College Student-Veterans and the Original GI Bill: Connected to Its Past and Committed to Its Future.” Dawn Kehrer, who holds a Master of Science, served as a speech pathologist for many years and then as a historian at a suburban Washington, D.C., national landmark.
“I have had the good fortune to have known Darryl and Dawn Kehrer since they were students,” Doyle said. “The criteria for this scholarship clearly identify the characteristics of the donors. They were passionate about learning and their professions. It is my privilege to be associated once again with Darryl and Dawn.”

- Are enrolled full time in any major in the School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications.
- Have maintained a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher after completing 24 college credits.
- Are “nontraditional” (as defined by entering Penn College four or more years after high school graduation).
- Have served in the U.S. military, are on active duty, or are enlisted in the Reserves or National Guard.
- Have exhibited a passion for their academic majors.
- Have exhibited leadership in on-campus and/or community initiatives or activities.
