Penn College Welding Student Receives National Scholarship

A Pennsylvania College of Technology welding student is one of 20 nationwide recipients of a manufacturing scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year.
Brandon M. Platt, Blairsville, a junior seeking a bachelor’s degree in welding and fabrication engineering technology, has been awarded a $1,500 scholarship from Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs, the foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International. To be eligible, applicants must be full-time students, meet a specified GPA and be enrolled in an engineering or manufacturing-related course of study leading to a career in manufacturing.
“We applaud Platt for being selected as a 2013-14 FMA scholarship winner and are pleased to assist him in fulfilling his academic goals,” said Ed Youdell, president and CEO of the Fabricators & Manufacturing Association. “Platt recognizes that working in a skilled manufacturing job can be rewarding financially and fulfilling personally, and with the education he has chosen, he will be more competitive in the 21st century manufacturing job market.”
In addition to the monetary award, Platt received a Student Design Kit CAD software package from SolidWorks Corp. The kit is a Windows-based 3-D CAD application that allows users to create and manipulate 3-D designs.
“We are very proud of Brandon, his solid work ethic and dedication to his education,” said David R. Cotner, dean of the School of Industrial, Computing & Engineering Technologies. “The FMA made a great choice in awarding this scholarship, and I have no doubt that he will continue to make us all proud in his professional pursuits following graduation.”
In addition to a bachelor’s degree in welding and fabrication engineering technology, Penn College offers an associate degree in welding technology and a certificate in welding. The college is an accredited test facility for the American Welding Society.
