Forest Technology Students to Benefit From Ringling Family’s Gift

Dennis F. and Patricia A. Ringling, a longtime forestry professor and his alumna spouse, plan to establish a scholarship at Pennsylvania College of Technology through a bequest.
“We’re extremely grateful for Dennis and Patricia’s thoughtfulness in establishing this scholarship and including the college in their wills,” said Robb Dietrich, executive director of the Penn College Foundation. “A planned gift is a great way to participate in the Penn College Scholarship Campaign while providing for the future of the college.”
Dennis, who was honored in 2010 with the Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award, has been a faculty member since 1972. His wife, a 1991 graduate of Penn College’s occupational therapy assistant major, was employed for 10 years with the Children’s Development Center.
“We’ve been blessed,” said Patricia, who is currently a massage therapist and yoga instructor. “The college has been very good to our family, and it just felt right to give back.”
The Ringlings’ three daughters – Alison, Andrea and Ashley – all attended The Pennsylvania State University, and Andrea graduated from Penn College’s physician assistant major in 2000.
Decades after he joined the faculty at the former Williamsport Area Community College, Dennis hasn’t lost his enthusiasm for taking students into the natural surroundings of the Schneebeli Earth Science Center near Allenwood.
“I still like what I’m doing; teaching keeps me on my toes,” he said. “I like working out in the woods. I love it when I’m outside.”
In that regard, he said, the scholarship mirrors his profession.
Whether investing in future enrollees through planned giving or instilling in today’s students the importance of environmental stewardship, “it’s how we take care of a very valuable resource.”
Preferred awards from the Ringling Family Scholarship will be for students in the forest technology major (full- or part-time) who have successfully completed 24 credit hours at Penn College and who have a home residence in Pennsylvania. After the initial awards, preference will also be given to past recipients from the scholarship fund.
The Ringlings’ generosity comes in support of The Penn College Scholarship Campaign, an initiative to raise at least $3.75 million for scholarships in conjunction with the college’s Centennial Celebration in 2014.
