North Campus to Offer Information Sessions for Health Programs

Pennsylvania College of Technology's North Campus, located just east of Wellsboro, will host information sessions for those interested in pursuing nursing or medical assisting as a career.

The sessions include information about the application process, tuition and financial aid. Visitors will be able to view the nursing lab and classrooms and have questions answered about the noncredit health-services programs being offered.

The next Medical Assistant class is scheduled to begin in September. An information session for those interested in the program will be presented at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, in room 117 at the North Campus.

Medical assistants are trained to hold a variety of entry-level medical office positions such as medical records clerk, billing and insurance clerk, office technician, information or personnel clerk, and phlebotomist.

The North Campus program consists of classroom and laboratory instruction to prepare participants to perform general administrative, receptionist and basic clinical procedures in doctor's offices, clinics, medical facilities and human-service agencies.

Participants complete 800 hours of classroom instruction and 160 hours in a medical office setting; graduation is scheduled for May 2013. Graduates are eligible to take the Registered Medical Assistant certification exam offered by the American Medical Technologists and the Phlebotomy certification exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association.

The next Practical Nursing class is scheduled to begin at the North Campus in January. An information session will be held at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, in room 125.

Excellent career opportunities for LPNs exist in area hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, personal-care facilities and human-service organizations.

Pre-admission testing and application acceptance will begin on June 1. All applicants must complete pre-entrance requirements by Oct. 1 to be considered for admission into the January 2013 class.

Classes for the 12-month, full-time Practical Nursing program are held at the North Campus, with clinical experiences offered at Laurel Health System facilities and Broad Acres Health and Rehabilitation Center, Wellsboro.

The Practical Nursing program is fully approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Those successfully completing the program will be prepared to take the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX-PN) for licensure as an LPN.
