Students, Mentors to Fight Hunger in Uniquely Artistic Fashion

Student organizations at Pennsylvania College of Technology will showcase their creative talent while joining the fight against hunger during Williamsport's first-ever "Canstruction" competition.
In an event organized by the college's Student Activities Office, campus groups joined by industry professionals will compete to design and build gigantic objects made from thousands of cans of food. After the structures are built and the winners declared, the creations will be on view to the general public as giant art exhibits.
At the close of the display, all of the food used in the structures, as well at that donated by spectators, will be delivered to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank's Williamsport branch.
"This event is a fantastic opportunity for Penn College students to have fun while also learning about the very real issue of hunger right here in our local community," said Kimberly R. Cassel, director of student activities. "Through their participation we are hoping to show them that they, too, can make a difference in the world around them."
Hours for public viewing will be 1 to 5 p.m. April 1 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 2-3 in Penn's Inn on the second floor of the Bush Campus Center. There is no admission cost; at-the-door offerings of canned food items are encouraged.

While a first for Williamsport, the "incredibly edible charity" is in its 14th year nationally. More than 100 cities participated in 2011, collecting more than 2 million pounds of food.
Canstruction is trademarked and organized by the Society of Design Administration and partners in cities with chapters of the American Institute of Architects and other professional allied organizations to produce the competitions. National sponsors include Architectural Digest, DuPont Corian, RTKL and Turner Construction.
