Penn College Teams Coming Off Good Week

All six Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports teams saw action last week, and they combined for six wins, suffered two losses and ended with three ties.



Flashback
Cross-Country
The Penn College men's team finished first in a nine-team field Saturday at Penn State Wilkes-Barre. Wildcat Travis Cain, of Bloomsburg, placed third over the 5.1-mile course in a time of 28 minutes, 30 seconds. Corvin Oberholtzer, of Wellsboro, finished eighth in 29:24. Teams and their scores were: Penn College, 60; Valley Forge, 64; Thaddeus Stevens, 98; Luzerne County CC, 111; Penn State Schuylkill, 122; Penn State Brandywine, 147; Penn State Scranton, 155; Penn State Mont Alto, 162; and Penn State Fayette, 232.

Golf
It was worth the wait for the Penn College golf team. Rained out of their scheduled opener the week before, the Wildcats finally got on the course Thursday in the Penn State Mont Alto Invitational and finished first among four teams. Freshman Corey Teeple, of Lake Ariel, medaled with a 74 as Penn College recorded a 336.

Men's Soccer
The Wildcats controlled the action Wednesday against Penn State Schuylkill, taking 37 shots and allowing only one in a 5-1 victory. Chris Brennan, of New Hope, scored two goals and Pat Kehoe, of Oley, had three assists. On Saturday in the second Battle for the Lumber, Penn College fought crosstown NCAA Division III rival Lycoming College to a 0-0 draw. Lycoming dominated statistically in both shots on goal and corner kicks, but the Wildcats held firm defensively behind freshman goalie Aaron Volz, of West Chester, to go to 3-1-2 overall. In the season's first United States Collegiate Athletic Association Coaches' poll, Penn College is No. 7.

Women's Soccer
Penn College opened its season Monday, storming to a 3-1 lead at Cedar Crest College before settling for a 3-3 tie. Scoring goals for the Wildcats were Valeria Passalacqua, of McAlisterville; Tiffany Turgeon, of Hooversville, and Samantha Stutz, of New Philadelphia. On Tuesday, the Wildcats fell to Baptist Bible College, 5-1. Passalacqua scored the lone goal. On Thursday, the squad tied Lincoln University, 1-1. Turgeon scored the team's only goal. On Saturday in the Battle for the Lumber, Penn College fell to crosstown rival NCAA Division III Lycoming College, 3-0, to go to 0-2-2 overall.

Team Tennis
Penn College opened its season with a 5-4 win over Penn State Hazleton on Wednesday. Nathan Scott, of Canton, Conn., won in singles and teamed with Adam Smith, of Duncannon, for a win in doubles, while Caleb Wise, of Manheim, and Adam Groff, of Washington Boro, also picked up singles wins and won together in men's doubles.

Women's Volleyball
On Saturday, the Wildcats knocked off Penn State Wilkes-Barre, 25-22, 25-22, 24-26, 20-25, 15-8, and Penn State Hazleton, 25-22, 25-3, 25-11, to even their season record at 6-6 and improve to 3-0 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference. In the first match, Melissa Lake, of Winburne, totaled 14 kills while Tara Powell, of Burgettstown, added 10. Rachel Heller, of Allison Park, led the team with 10 digs and Lyndsey Smith, of Mechanicsburg, had 23 assists. In the second match against Hazleton, Kelly Hebert, of Wellsboro, and Courtney Gernert, of Palmyra, each had four kills. Gernert also added seven digs while Smith had 16 assists. In the season's first United States Collegiate Athletic Association Coaches' poll, Penn College is ranked No. 13.

On the Horizon
Monday, the college golf team will be seeking its second straight win as it hosts an invitational event at the White Deer Golf Complex.
