ITS Enlists Campus Community in 'Shared Responsibility' of Online Security

In recognition of October's designation as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, PCToday in cooperation with Pennsylvania College of Technology's Information Technology Services will share weekly Cyberbriefs, each with a different theme related to information security.
Cyberbriefs will be published each Monday this month through announcements here and on the myPCT portal. The topic of this week's installment is "Social Networking and Online Classifieds Safety." Future briefs will cover identify theft and fraud, passwords and encryption, and the ongoing challenges in IT security.
The Cyberbriefs, written in non-technical language and intended to increase awareness and understanding of critically important information-security topics, can be shared with colleagues, friends and family to help create a safer Internet for all.
The theme of this year's observance, also the focus of StaySafeOnline.org and of orange posters displayed across campus, is "Our Shared Responsibility." The website contains a wealth of information for home users, K-12 teachers, college students, higher-education administrators and businesses interested in keeping our children, ourselves and our information safe online.
"Many of us are in possession of sensitive information not only related to ourselves, but also to our children, our family, our friends and our colleagues," said Daniel R. Bennett, information technology security analyst for ITS. "Those individuals trust that we will use their information appropriately and safeguard it. In this age, when almost anything can be found on the Internet or other electronic media, we need to be diligent and be responsible for protecting all information we handle and possess."
