A $10,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development's Workforce Leadership Program will support a residential summer camp for 24 high school students enrolled in Pennsylvania College of Technology's dual-enrollment electronics program.

Organized by Elizabeth A. Biddle, project manager for the college's Outreach for K-12 Office, and Stacey C. Hampton, coordinator of matriculation and retention for the School of Industrial and Engineering Technologies, the overnight camp tentatively scheduled for June will provide 24 teenagers with four days of activities.

"The summer technology camp will provide an opportunity for students to discover electronics as it is integrated through a variety of majors," Biddle said. "Electronics students will experience new applications for the knowledge they gain in Penn College NOW."

The Penn College NOW program offers qualified students the opportunity to earn full college credit while attending high school. Classes are taught by high school teachers, with curricular guidance and support from college faculty, during the regular school day.

The schedule still is being devised, but plans are to involve students in a variety of campus activities that dovetail with careers represented by the School of Industrial and Engineering Technologies not only electronics, but civil engineering, computer aided drafting, welding, plastics and automated manufacturing. A visit to the Pennsylvania State University's Center for Nanotechnology Education and Utilization also is planned.

Information about the camp will be made available in mid-spring to students at local and regional high schools that participate in the electronics curriculum: Clearfield County Career & Technology Center, Columbia-Montour Area Vocational-Technical School, Jersey Shore Area High School, Keystone Central Career & Technology Center, Monroe Career & Technical Institute, SUN Area Technical Institute, and Williamsport Area High School.
