Pennsylvania College of Technology President Davie Jane Gilmour with Eli M. Hughes, of State College, recipient of an Alumni Achievement Award.Pennsylvania College of Technology presented an Alumni Achievement Award to Eli M. Hughes, of State College, during Spring Commencement ceremonies held Saturday at the Community Arts Center, Williamsport.

Hughes earned a bachelor's degree in electronics engineering technology from Penn College in May 2001. He holds a master's degree and is pursuing a doctorate in acoustics from The Pennsylvania State University.

Hughes is employed as a research engineer III at the Penn State Applied Research Lab, where he previously held the positions of associate research engineer and research assistant. He has also worked as an embedded systems engineer at Playworld Systems Inc., as a DSP hardware engineer at QorTek Inc., and as a part-time electronics instructor at Penn College. He holds four U.S. patents for his work.

"Eli has been very supportive of our department," said Richard J. Calvert, assistant professor of electronics at Penn College. "He has invited our students to work on projects with him both in his work in industry and at the (Applied Research Lab). He has worked on getting our students into graduate school. He has always had suggestions as to ways we can improve our courses using new tools and methods.

"He is now on our advisory committee for electronics and computer engineering technology. He has never forgotten where he started from and will be a strong supporter of Penn College, and our applications-oriented learning, for years to come."

The Alumni Achievement Award is presented annually to a Penn College graduate from the past 10 years.

The award recognizes noteworthy professional or volunteer accomplishments that demonstrate the importance of a Penn College education, and it honors graduates who continue to support the mission of the college.
