Pennsylvania College of Technology's School of Health Sciences will host a 5K Run/Walk on April 17 to raise scholarship funds for students enrolled in health sciences majors at the college.

Faculty and staff from the School of Health Sciences are organizing the event. Net proceeds from the race will be used to support the School of Health Sciences Endowed Scholarship Fund, with the goal of building the fund to an endowment of at least $25,000, after which it will become a permanent source of scholarship awards.

"We are excited to be hosting this inaugural event as we come together as a school to create an endowed scholarship," said Sharon K. Waters, dean of health sciences. "This initiative will help us to leave a lasting legacy that will benefit future students as they prepare to enter exciting and rewarding health professions. We welcome the participation of the community and the region in this worthy cause."

The race is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the college's main entrance. Registration will take place from 8 to 9:45 a.m. The cost to register before April 17 is $15. Race-day registration is $20. To request a registration form, e-mail the School of Health Sciences or call 570-320-2400, ext. 7240.

Prizes will be awarded to the top-finishing male and female runner and walker.

Recipients of awards from the School of Health Sciences Endowed Scholarship Fund will be selected from eligible applicants who are enrolled full time in at least their second semester of any major in the School of Health Sciences, with a grade-point average of at least 3.0. An applicant's community service and college extracurricular activities will be taken into account.

The School of Health Sciences offers bachelor's degrees in applied health studies, dental hygiene, nursing and physician assistant, as well as associate degrees in dental hygiene, emergency medical services, health arts, nursing, occupational therapy assistant, physical fitness specialist, radiography and surgical technology.
