Wildcats Victorious at Home, on the Road

'Cat Tales Cross-Country On Saturday at the Luzerne County Community College Invitational, the Penn College men finished first among four Penn State University Athletic Conference teams in the field and the Penn College women were first among two teams. Wildcat Mark Corderio was the top men's runner in 29:54, while Bradley Robinson (West Chester) was third in 30:59 and Jeff Faherty (Sussex, N.J.) fourth in 31:09. For the Penn College women, Tamara Pavlov was second in 21:42 and Hollie Schuster (Jersey Shore) third in 22:38. The Penn College men scored 22 points and were followed by Penn State Scranton with 68, Penn State Schuylkill 135 and Penn State-DuBois 153. The Penn College women scored 28 points and Penn State Scranton had 29.

GolfPlaying on the road for the first time this season at the difficult Mystic Rock Golf Course in Farmington, the Wildcats tasted defeat at the hands of Penn State Mont Alto. Mont Alto posted a 319, Penn College a 343, Penn State New Kensington a 351, host Penn State Fayette a 357, Penn State Shenango a 368 and Penn State Greater Allegheny a 435.

"The team struggled today on the very challenging Mystic Rock golf course. A lot of players were playing the course blind, which is a hard thing to do on a course that is covered hole-to-hole with water hazards, sand traps, rock crops and woodlands," observed Wildcats coach Matt Haile.

"A couple of our guys had some big numbers on their cards, which led to some higher than normal scores. I know some of them, after talking about their rounds, need to play smarter golf. We will continue to work on this aspect of their games throughout the season in order to get them ready for the championships," the first-year coach added.

Individually for Penn College, Eric Schall (Jersey Shore) and Craig Flint (Port Allegany) each shot 82, Kevin Durnin (Havertown) shot an 88, Dean Bell (Schwenksville) 91, Kurt Linhart (Zionsville) 94 and Steve Beach (Roaring Springs) 97. Penn State Mont Alto's Kevin Reiber was the medalist with a 73.

Men's SoccerMorris Sayon (Upper Darby), Steven Bullock (Manheim) and Nick Grasso (New Columbia) each scored goals in a 3-0 home win over Penn State Abington.

The Wildcats went to 2-0 on the week with a 3-1 nonconference win over Pitt-Bradford. William DeAngelo (Dallas) had a goal and an assist, while Coleby Frye (York) and Derek Geisinger (Red Lion) each added goals.

Saturday at home against Penn State Hazleton, the Wildcats posted a 2-1 overtime victory.

Women's SoccerBoth offense and defense were in high gear in Penn College's home opener against Penn State Abington. Kierstin Steer (South Williamsport) scored four goals and added an assist, Katie Moltz (Pottstown) tallied two goals and two assists and Julliette Yeager (Hamburg) scored a pair of goals. Penn College took 26 shots on goal and held Penn State Abington to four in its 8-1 win.

Saturday at Penn State DuBois, Steer scored the game-winning goal at the 76:20 mark to lift the Wildcats to a 5-4 win. Moltz scored two goals and added an assist, Ashley Mull (South Williamsport) had a goal and assist, Kim Daley (Springfield) had a goal and Steer added an assist for Penn College.

Coed TennisWednesday's match at Penn State Wilkes-Barre was suspended by rain and will be completed as part of a doubleheader Oct. 17.

Saturday's scheduled match at Penn State Brandywine was postponed due to rain. No makeup date has yet been set.

Women's VolleyballIn a decisive fifth game, Penn College posted a 15-9 midweek win in beating Penn State Brandywine as it stepped into Penn State University Athletic Conference play.

Statistically, Kara Matson (Troy) had four aces and six kills, Alyssa Covas (Pottsville) had 15 digs and four kills and Tara Powell (Burgettstown) had 10 digs and five kills.

Saturday at home with Penn State Beaver and Penn State Hazleton, the Wildcats split, beating Penn State Hazleton, 25-11, 25-10, 25-12 and falling to Penn State Beaver, 25-20, 21-25, 25-10, 22-25, 15-12, to go to 3-5 overall on the season and 2-1 in the PSUAC.
