Let's do this.

If your current level indicates that you should brush up on your math skills to prepare for your major, you've come to the right place.

Your developmental requirements can be found on your Placement Results page on the Student Information System (SIS). Consider the options below as you meet developmental requirements and lay the groundwork for a successful college experience. Pick the path that works best for you.

Things to consider.

When making your decision, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Think about these factors:

  • The number of developmental course requirements you have

  • The impact on your ability to do well in your major

  • Potential enrollment restrictions for your major

  • The remediation resources available to you

For more information about your course requirements, log in to the Student Information System (SIS) and navigate to your Graduation Audit/Student Profile under Academic Information.

Plan to strengthen skills and retest?

Here's what you need to know.

Remediate

Remediation may help improve your placement level. Remediation works best if you have experience with the subject area but need to refresh your skills. You may choose to remediate by doing one of the following:

  • Work with a private tutor (teacher or other professional)
  • Take adult education courses (or other noncredit courses)
  • Participate in other programs designed to build skills in your deficient area, such as Penn College's Math Skills Development Program. To register for this remediation program, go to your Placement Results on SIS.

Give yourself plenty of time to prepare since you may only retest one time. Retests must occur before the start of classes.

Retest

To request a retest, access the form by doing the following:

  • Log in to SIS.
  • Select Admissions Information on the left.
  • Go to Placement Results and click on the Request a Retest link at the bottom of the page.
  • Complete the form. Then, watch for an email indicating the retest request was approved.

Accommodations for testing are available for students who meet qualifications. If you did not request accommodations before, but believe you might be eligible, complete the self-disclosure form to begin the process. For more information, contact Disability and Access Resources.

Plan to take developmental courses?

Here's what you need to know.

Begin with developmental courses

If you can satisfy developmental requirements before your first semester, great. If not, you'll be scheduled for developmental courses your first semester and in subsequent semesters as necessary. This may or may not impact the time it takes to complete your program at Penn College.

The goal is to successfully complete all developmental coursework within your first two semesters. For some majors, developmental requirements must be satisfied before taking any major-specific courses.

To learn more about developmental coursework and acceptable completion timelines, see our Admissions Policy.

Take summer courses at Penn College

We can help you jumpstart your learning. Penn College offers a discount on all developmental courses during the summer. We also offer on-campus housing to encourage a solid transition experience as you get ready for college life in the fall. Summer course scheduling for the fall semester opens in April.

Take developmental courses elsewhere

You can also take developmental courses at another institution and transfer them to Penn College. Here's how:

  1. Confirm that you are scheduling the right course(s) using our Transfer Course Equivalency Search
  2. Once you have identified the equivalent course(s), contact the institution you plan to attend to discuss their enrollment process.
  3. Earn a grade of "C" of higher (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) in each course to transfer those course(s).
  4. Upon completion, have the institution send an official transcript to Penn College Admissions.
