Industrious business students at Pennsylvania College of Technology have begun one of the largest food drives in local history, hoping to collect 10,000 nonperishable items at various locations by April 30. Spurred by one of its corporate sponsors the Campbell Soup Co.

Joe Simon, a junior guard-forward on the Penn College men's basketball team, has been awarded Penn State University Athletic Conference Honorable Mention honors. Simon, a business management student from Renovo, scored 382 points during the Wildcats' 18-12 season that included a sixth-place finish in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national tournament.

Area residents concerned about where their food is grown and wishing to reduce their ecological footprint can discover the meaning of "locavore" the Oxford American Dictionary's 2007 Word of the Year at a public forum in Pennsylvania College of Technology's Madigan Library. A family known for its popular businesses in downtown Williamsport will be providing financial-aid support for students in Pennsylvania College of Technology's School of Hospitality. Siblings Maria, Fred and Francis Daniele have established the Daniele Family Scholarship Fund at Penn College. The endowed fund will be a permanent source of scholarship awards for students.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which Pennsylvania College of Technology students and community volunteers from The Salvation Army annually help hundreds of low-income local residents prepare their returns, soon will resume for the 2008 tax season. The Internal Revenue Service's free program will be offered in Room 102 of Penn College's Madigan Library from 4-6 p.m.

Pennsylvania College of Technology will host a renowned Washington, D.C., chef and restaurateur in February as part of its Visiting Chef Series. The series invites accomplished chefs to the college's campus to mentor and work alongside students in the college's School of Hospitality over several days, culminating in the elaborate Visiting Chef dinner to benefit scholarship funds.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which Pennsylvania College of Technology students prepare income-tax returns at no cost, will offer three Fridays of by-appointment-only help to Northern Tier residents this season. The program will be offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 20, March 20 and April 3 at Penn College's North Campus, along Route 6 between Wellsboro and Mansfield.
