More than 200 students from 18 school groups in five area counties gathered at Pennsylvania College of Technology Thursday for the annual Student Government Seminar hosted by state Sen. Gene Yaw, R-23rd.

The event is the largest Senate-organized student government seminar in the commonwealth, and is hosted annually by Yaw, who also serves as Penn College Board of Directors chair.

As they prepare to join their peers in introducing and debating legislation, a brother and sister from Sullivan County High School play the roles of state senators in an exercise to explore the merits of voting with the majority of their constituents or voting their own consciences and beliefs.

College President Michael J. Reed joined Yaw in welcoming the crowd of students, teachers, local and state government officials, community leaders, and members of the media.

Addressing the noble calling of public service, Reed noted, "Perhaps some of you will embark on similar paths, and experiences like those you will enjoy here today will play a role in that process."

He added, "Ideally, public service should reflect the collective best instincts of society. Here at Penn College, we hope to plant the seeds in our students early with a range of service-learning opportunities to expand their horizons, so that they can continue such efforts throughout their careers. The aim is for them to become not just successful in business and industry, but to become leaders within their personal and professional communities — the 'tomorrow makers,' as we like to call them."

Participating from Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, Tioga and Union counties were: Athens Area High School, Canton Jr./Sr. High School, Christian Home Educator Fellowship, Grace Christian Academy, Jersey Shore Area High School, Lewisburg Area High School, Loyalsock Township High School, Mifflinburg Area High School, Montgomery Area High School, Montoursville Area High School, Muncy Jr./Sr. High School, Saint John Neumann Regional Academy, South Williamsport Area Jr./Sr. High School, Sullivan County High School, Towanda Area Jr./Sr. High School, Troy Jr./Sr. High School, Williamson High School, and Williamsport Area High School.

The intent of the forum is for students to obtain a better understanding of the legislative process and develop professional relationships that can open the door for future internships and job opportunities. The seminar allows students to develop legislation, debate important issues and vote on ‘mock’ bills in an open session.
