The foundational reach of a Pennsylvania College of Technology education has prompted a New York family to make a substantial investment in student scholarships at the institution.

The Glenn Lois family, of Fishkill, New York, made an initial $30,000 gift in March as part of The Legacy Campaign for Penn College, then committed to that amount for four additional years. The $150,000 total gift places the family on the college’s Donor Wall as members of the Visionary Society ($100,000 to $499,999).

Lois’ son, Troy, was a student at the time, pursuing degrees in power generation and heavy construction equipment technology: operator emphasis, and Glenn Lois said he speaks highly of his time on campus.

“Troy and I are in the tool and equipment rental business. Penn College provided a diverse, applicable foundation for him,” the father said. “From diesel to power generation and site work, we encounter situations each day that the college’s education speaks to.”

Lois also noted that Troy’s grandmother Ellen – who died in April at the age of 86 – derived much joy “from seeing her grandchildren studying what they love in a safe and diverse educational setting.”

The Lois Family Scholarship will enable annual $8,000 awards to each of three students, renewable for up to four years.

Primary preference will be given to students from New York’s Hudson Valley with financial need, who are enrolled full time in any academic major and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Secondary preference is to any resident of New York state.

“This generous gift allows us to offer significant awards that make the Penn College experience possible for students who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity, while creating a lasting tribute to the Lois family name,” said Kimberly R. Cassel, college relations director.
