Two Penn College teams post wins

Wins by the women’s soccer and men’s tennis teams and United East recognition for two individuals were highlights for Pennsylvania College of Technology athletes last week.

Women’s soccer
In their highest-scoring match in nearly a decade, Kaelynn Sheetz, of Elizabethtown, and Megan Ney, of Trevorton, each scored three goals and had an assist, while Brieanna Twigg, of Montgomery, and Lexy Hunselman, of Selinsgrove, each scored twice in the Wildcats’ 12-0 nonconference romp over Penn State Schuylkill on Monday. Goalie Nicole Lichtinger, of Erie, preserved the shutout with one save as Penn College outshot its opponent 25-1 on goal. Among the team’s previous double-digit shutouts were a 10-0 victory earlier this season, 11-goal wins in 2018 and 2013 and a 13-goal effort against Penn State Greater Allegheny on Oct. 13, 2013.

Hosting Susquehanna University in nonconference action on Wednesday, Penn College lost, 4-0, as the River Hawks led in shots on goal, 8-4.

Leading 3-2 in the 54th minute at United East unbeaten Penn State Berks on Saturday, the Wildcats gave up three late goals in a 5-3 loss that saw them go to 3-2 in the conference and 5-8-1 overall. Sara Darlington, of West Chester, tallied twice for Penn College.

For the second week in a row, Sheetz, a junior, was named UE Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 26-Oct. 2, during which she scored two goals in a win over St. Mary’s (Md.) College.

Men’s soccer
At Juniata College in nonconference play on Tuesday, Juniata led in shots on goal, 14-1, and scored a 3-0 win.

On Saturday at Penn State Berks in UE action, Michael Dougherty, of Lancaster, scored the lone Penn College goal in the 89th minute of a 4-1 loss as the Wildcats fell to 1-3-1 in the UE and 2-8-3 overall.

Women’s volleyball
In a 3-0 nonconference loss at Pitt-Bradford on Tuesday, Coryn Oswald, of Langhorne, led Penn College with nine digs and five kills, while Cheyenne Stein, of Orwigsburg, had seven assists and two aces.

Opening United East play at home on Saturday, the Wildcats dropped decisions to St. Mary’s (Md.) College, 3-2, and Gallaudet University, 3-0, to go to 2-12 overall. Individual leaders were Oswald with 16 kills, Stein with 31 assists and Brooke Simmons, of Waterford, with 27 digs.

Men’s/women’s tennis
Penn College’s men’s and women’s tennis teams split in nonconference action against crosstown rival Lycoming College on Friday with the men winning, 5-4, to go to 1-1 overall and the women losing in their season-opener, 9-0. Kyle Shuler, of Williamsport, won both of his matches at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.

A 9-0 nonconference loss to Lock Haven University on Sunday dropped the women's team to 0-2.

Cross-country
Mitchell Campbell, of Riegelsville, finished 30th in 26:49 to lead the Wildcat men to an eighth-place finish over an 8K distance and Skyelar Splain, of Liverpool, placed 73rd in 29:42 to pace the Wildcat women over a 6K course and a ninth-place finish in action at Mansfield University’s Ed Winrow Invitational on Saturday.

Golf
Sophomore Peyton Mussina, of Montoursville, was named the United East Golfer of the Week as he found the podium twice during Sept. 26-Oct. 2 after he placed third in the Wilson College Invitational and won the United East Preview.
