Conference play begins for Penn College soccer

In a week that saw Pennsylvania College of Technology soccer teams step into their first United East Conference matches of the season, the women’s volleyball team snapped a long, two-season loss string.



Men’s soccer
At Albright College on Tuesday, the Wildcats lost, 1-0, to drop to 1-3-1 overall. Penn College led in shots, 15-7 (8-2 on goal), and in corner kicks, 6-4, but couldn’t cash in while being shut out for its second match in a row.

Hosting Lancaster Bible College on Saturday in its UEC opener, the two teams scored in the second half and then battled to a 1-1 tie in double overtime, leaving the Wildcats with a 1-3-2 overall mark. Lancaster Bible led in shots, 22-16 (10-7 on goal), and in corner kicks, 10-8. Colton Wartman, of Ellicott City, Maryland, tallied the lone Penn College goal.

Right back in UEC action on Sunday at Penn State Harrisburg, the Wildcats lost, 10-0, dropping to 1-4-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference. Harrisburg led in shots, 21-2 (16-1 on goal), and in corner kicks, 8-4.

Women’s soccer
In the Battle for the Lumber at crosstown rival Lycoming College on Wednesday, Lycoming scored once in each half for a 2-0 win that gave Penn College its first loss of the season after two wins. The Warriors now have won five of the eight matches between the two teams since 2013, including the last two. Lycoming led in shots, 21-7 (15-5 on goal), and in corner kicks, 8-2.

On Saturday in its UEC opener at home against Lancaster Bible College, the Wildcats dropped a 3-0 decision that leveled their overall record at 2-2. Lancaster Bible led in shots, 19-6 (9-2 on goal), and in corner kicks, 6-2.

Returning to UEC action on Sunday at Penn State Harrisburg, Penn College lost, 5-0, to fall to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Harrisburg led in shots, 14-7 (9-6 on goal), and corner kicks, 6-1.

Also last week, Teagan Willey, of Towanda, was named the UEC women’s soccer Offensive Player of Week after her three-goal, one-assist performance during a 9-0 rout of Keystone College on Sept. 10.

Women’s volleyball
On Monday hosting Keystone College, the Wildcats earned their first win of the season after three losses, 25-18, 29-27, 18-25, 29-27, and snapped a two-season (going back to 2019), 19-match losing streak. Hannah Burnett, of Middlebury Center, led Penn College with 13 kills, 10 aces and 22 digs while Cheyenne Stein, of Orwigsburg, was tops in assists with 28 and blocks with two.

At home with Alfred State College on Friday, Penn College fell, 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-13), to drop to 1-4. Burnett led the Wildcats with 13 digs while Stein led with 12 assists.

Golf
In its season opener on Tuesday in the Elizabethtown Fall Invitational at Hershey Country Club East, Penn College men’s golfers totaled 330 to finish 11th. Will Orwig, of Mifflintown, shot an 81 to lead the Wildcats on the par 71, 7,061-yard course to finish 39th, while Sean McNamara, of Lancaster, fired an 82 and tied for 40th; Alex Acree, of Brookville, shot an 83 and tied for 44th; Nathan Hoyer, of Windsor, shot an 84 and tied for 46th; and Karson Felty, of Pine Grove, shot an 87 and tied for 57th. Dickinson College won the 14-team event with a 289, while Dickinson’s Tyler Tomoe led the 69-player field with a 68.

Men’s/women’s tennis
After a second season-opening scheduling postponement, the Wildcats finally got under way Saturday at Susquehanna University with both teams losing, 8-1.

Tucker Phillippe-Johansson, of Mattituck, New York, and Paul Langbein, of Carnegie, picked up the lone Penn College men’s point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles while Delaney Bouton, of Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, earned the lone Penn College women’s win at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Esports
On Monday, Penn College lost to Messiah University in Overwatch and lost to Lebanon Valley College in Rocket League, both by 3-0 scores, and on Tuesday, the Wildcats iRacing team qualified 17th and ended 24th in Red Bull Ring.
