Brian Fuhrman, public sector solutions major account manager for Waste Management, presents a check to Elizabeth A. Biddle, director of corporate relations for Pennsylvania College of Technology. The $8,500 gift will support the college’s Penn College NOW dual-enrollment program and SMART Girls summer camp. Both are for high school students.Penn College NOW enables academically qualified high school students to earn college credit through courses taught by Penn College-approved teachers at their high school or career and technology center. Forty-one such schools participate in the nationally accredited Penn College NOW.

The “SMART” in SMART Girls stands for Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies. The camp welcomes girls in grades nine to 11 to the Penn College campus, where they experience math and science as a foundation for careers in technology. During the 2016 camp, the girls explored entrepreneurship, innovation and digital fabrication as they designed a business plan, 3-D printed product and marketing materials.

“This gift is helping us to reach more high school students with these opportunities to earn college credit or engage in careers that provide family-sustaining wages,” said Elizabeth A. Biddle, director of corporate relations. “We are sincerely grateful for Waste Management’s generosity.”

Penn College NOW and SMART Girls are recognized as “innovative educational programs” under the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Earned Income Tax Credit program, through which Waste Management made its gift.
