Fall Tennis Seasons End for Wildcats

In action over the past week, the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s tennis team ended its fall season and the women’s soccer team dropped its first match of the campaign in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.
Women's Tennis
Wrapping up its fall season on Wednesday at Misericordia University, Penn College lost, 9-0, and ended 0-7. At No. 1 singles, Melissa Stabley, of Cogan Station, went three sets before falling, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 5-10.
Commenting on his teams’ seasons (the men wrapped its season up a week ago, going 0-4), first-year coach John Machak said, “As a first-time (collegiate) head coach, it took me some time to understand each player individually and find out where they need to improve. (Now) knowing that, in the winter, we’re going to do a clinic at the West Branch Racquet Club. In January, when they return to school, we’ll be hitting over at the club during the bad weather, getting ready for April so that we’re ready to go.
“In the spring, we will get back several players who currently play soccer, which will really complete the ladies team. We’re going to be a lot tougher when the spring comes,” the coach said.
“For the men, most of them are freshmen so they’re just getting their feet wet with ‘what is college tennis like, how is it different than high school.’ We have a really strong squad, but they’re young, so that clinic in January will work out those bugs so we are ready to go in the spring … We just need to pull it all together and we should get a lot of wins,” Machak added.
Women's Soccer
On Saturday, after six consecutive NEAC wins, the Wildcats tasted defeat for the first time this season in a 2-1 loss at Wells College. In a tightly played match, Wells led in shots, 18-16 (10-7 on goal), and in corner kicks, 7-4. Wells scored both of its goals in the first half and Penn College got its lone goal at 50:09 on a shot by Tiffany Brown, of Mechanicsburg, off an assist by Hailee Hartman, of Lampeter.
At home with Keuka College on Sunday, Penn College rebounded with a 2-0 NEAC win that upped its overall record to 8-5-1 and conference mark to 7-1. Jane Herman, of Greencastle, scored the first Penn College goal at 27:37 on a penalty kick and Alexis Trkula, of Leechburg, added the second at the 29-minute mark. Keuka led in shots, 10-8, although the Wildcats led in shots on goal, 3-2. Keuka also led in corner kicks, 4-1.
In NEAC action this week: at SUNY Cobleskill (2-9 overall, 0-8 NEAC through Sunday), 1 p.m., Saturday; at SUNY Poly (8-4-1, 5-3), 3 p.m. Sunday.
Last meeting vs. SUNY Cobleskill: Last Sept. 27, the Wildcats won, 2-1, on goals by Angela Maniscalco and an own goal. Penn College led 32-6 in shots (11-4 on goal) and in corner kicks, 12-3.
Last meeting vs. SUNY Poly: Last Sept. 26, the teams tied, 2-2. Scoring goals for Penn College were Hartman and Lauren Herr.
Statistically speaking through Sunday: Hartman is tied for fourth in the conference with 11 goals and is fifth in points with 24. Keeper Colleen Bowes, of Wayne, is second in save percentage (.818) and third in goals against average (0.91) in the NEAC.

At home on Tuesday in NEAC action with Cazenovia College, the Wildcats lost, 2-0. Penn College led in shots, 15-13, and corner kicks, 9-8, but couldn’t find the back of the net as Cazenovia’s goalie made two saves in each half to record the shutout.
On the road at Wells College in conference play on Saturday, Penn College fell, 3-0. Wells led in shots, 27-4 (12-1 on goal), and in corner kicks, 12-0.
Returning home on Sunday against Keuka College, the Wildcats lost, 4-0, as Keuka led in shots, 21-6 (12-1 on goal), and in corner kicks, 4-2, as Penn College dropped to 2-11 overall and 1-7 in the NEAC.

Against Wilkes, Lauren Slater, of Littlestown, had 17 assists and Coldsmith 16 digs. Against Penn State Altoona, Coldsmith had 15 assists and 19 digs while Jordyn Smeltzer, of Manchester, and Felicia Webber, of New Bloomfield, each had 16 digs.

Competing on its new course at the Williamsport Country Club for the first time on Monday, Penn College finished first in a three-team. The Wildcats recorded a 320, Bloomsburg club team a 353 and Lycoming College a 363. Individually for Penn College, Ned Baumbach, of Elizabethtown, shot a 75; Zachary Yost, of Johnstown, an 80; Justin Greedey, of Turbotville, an 81; and Blake Bennett, of Pennsburg, and Tyler Marks, of Forked River, New Jersey, both 84.
Sunday’s match at Bryn Athyn was postponed, with a makeup date to be announced.
