Student Receives Scholarship from State Professional Association

A Pennsylvania College of Technology student was named one of two recipients of the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association’s Reba M. Sebelist Scholarship.
The scholarship was awarded to Jeanette M. Yatsko, of Monroe Township, Luzerne County, who is pursuing an associate degree in occupational therapy assistant and a bachelor’s degree in applied health studies at Penn College.
POTA provides scholarships to its student members who attain a GPA of 3.5 or higher and are interested in assuming a leadership role in the association. Applicants were required to submit an essay detailing realistic ways they will contribute to POTA while serving as a student leader, as well as letters of recommendation.
In addition to the cash award, the Sebelist Scholarship recipients are invited to become active members of a POTA committee or task force.
Yatsko is the student liaison to POTA. She has also been active in the Student Occupational Therapy Assistant Club at Penn College, assisting with planning and implementing multiple service projects.
The Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association’s mission is to provide mentoring to its members; uphold the core values, ethics and standards of occupational therapy practice; and update members on health care issues.
Occupational therapy provides opportunities to assist people facing challenges in everyday life. Occupational therapy assistants work in collaboration with supervising occupational therapists to serve individuals or groups who experience impairment, loss of activity or ability to participate fully in meaningful occupations due to genetic disorders, chronic conditions, illness, accidents, mental impairment, or social conditions such as poverty and violence.
Through guided and goal-directed participation in occupations of leisure, work and activities of daily living, individuals can restore their ability to do the things they need, want or are expected to do.
Penn College offers an associate degree in occupational therapy assistant that can be continued to a bachelor’s degree in applied health studies. All of the coursework for the bachelor’s degree is available online. To learn more, call 570-327-4519.
