Four Penn College Wrestlers Get Wins at Nittany Lion Open

Pennsylvania College of Technology wrestlers gained some valuable experience while competing in the Penn State Nittany Lion Open and its men’s and women’s basketball teams split in action through Saturday.
Wrestling
Four Penn College wrestlers posted at least one win on Dec. 7 in the Nittany Lion Open. Going 1-2 against some of the best wrestlers in the East were Wildcats Slade Storm, of New Oxford, in the 149-pound weight class; Tanner Leid, of Terre Hill, at 157; Tony King, of Kingston, at 165; and Dan Frankenfield, of Dushore, at 174. Storm and King scored falls while Leid and Frankenfield won decisions.
“Overall, it was a rough day, but a great learning experience,” Penn College coach Schuyler Frey said. “We had our eyes opened as to how physical the top wrestlers in the country are. Some of our guys learned they can hang with D-I wrestlers; and a number of areas we need to improve on. Wrestling in these type of events, while we have limited success, helps to improve our confidence and build on our intensity.”
The Wildcats now are idle until Jan. 17, when they travel to Gettysburg College.
Men’s Basketball
Two defensive lapses that allowed Penn State-Berks to go on runs of 13-0 in the first half and 17-0 in the second half proved costly for Penn College on Friday night in an 80-65 North Eastern Athletic Conference road loss. Nathaniel Brown, of Philadelphia, led Penn College scorers with 14 points and Kevin Laurence-El, of Milton, added 11 points while James Boylan, of Newton, New Jersey, pulled down 12 rebounds as the Wildcats dropped to 1-2 in the conference and 2-6 overall.
Women’s Basketball
On the road in NEAC action on Friday at Penn State Berks, Alicia Ross, of Williamsport, scored 23 points and Charese Bova, of Beech Creek, added 20 points and hauled down 21 rebounds in an 84-57 Wildcats victory that boosted them to 2-1 in the conference and leveled their overall record at 3-3. Hannah Schoenly, of Hamburg, added 12 points in the win.
