Early Childhood Faculty Member Serves as Peer Reviewer

Billie A. Coffman, associate professor of early childhood education at Pennsylvania College of Technology, was recently asked by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Postsecondary and Adult Education, to serve on a peer review team to evaluate another college’s proposed child care professional associate-degree program.
As a peer reviewer, Coffman was responsible for evaluating the course content in the degree program, reviewing all of the course syllabi and faculty credentials, and submitting a final report with recommendations for approval of the program.
Coffman, of Altoona, holds a master’s degree from Penn State and a bachelor’s degree from Lock Haven University. She is pursuing a doctorate from Penn State.
She has taught at Penn College since 1989, when she was hired as the college’s first full-time faculty member to teach early childhood education courses.
Coffman is a trainer for The Fred Rogers Co., a nonprofit company dedicated to creating children’s media and professional and parenting resources. Since 1989, she has presented early childhood workshops at national, regional and local conferences and has served as a textbook reviewer for Delmar Publishers, Albany, N.Y. In 2006, she was named to “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.”
In addition, Coffman has been involved with developing training for early childhood educators in Lycoming, Centre, Clinton, Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties through the Pennsylvania Keys to Quality program since its inception in 1992.
She is co-founder of the Central Susquehanna Association for the Education of Young Children, an affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. In 2001, she was honored with the CSAEYC’s "Early Childhood Educator of the Year” award.
