Change in Governance Leadership Marked at College Council Meeting
Symbolizing the continuity of Penn College's internal Governance system while refreshing itself with a new administration, the outgoing and incoming chairs of College Council passed the gavel at Tuesday afternoon's meeting. The informal ceremony, a tradition in the making, transferred leadership from Eugene M. McAvoy, assistant dean of integrated studies-programs, to Gerri F. Luke, associate professor of business administration/management and marketing. The gavel formerly belonged to David A. London, an associate professor of speech communication/composition, who died in May 2008. It was presented to McAvoy by Sandra Lakey, associate professor of speech communication/composition and one of London's closest friends and colleagues, who told him "it was appropriate for the chair of College Council to have it, especially since David ... was responsible for helping rescue Governance during a difficult period," McAvoy said. "David was one of my mentors and was personally responsible for my getting involved in Governance and instrumental in my election as chair of College Council." The gavel hereafter will bear London's name in tribute.
