Wildcat Athletes Post Triumphant Week

Wildcat TalesIt was very good week for Pennsylvania College of Technology athletic teams as they won 19 games, lost three and tied one.

FlashbackMen's SoccerThe team opened its week with a 9-0 Penn State University Athletic Conference win over Penn State Schuylkill. Jevin Martin (Northumberland) scored three goals, Bill DeAngelo (Dallas) had a goal and three assists, Steven Bullock (Manheim) had a goal and two assists, and Ben Shade (Fleetwood) scored two goals. The Wildcats outshot Schuylkill, 19-2. Thursday, the Wildcats got off to a 3-0 first-half lead against previously unbeaten Penn State York, but wound up with a 3-3 draw after two overtimes. Going into the match, Penn College had won 44 straight PSUAC matches over the past four seasons. Its last conference loss came on Sept. 26, 2006, at the hands of Penn State Delaware, 4-3. It has won 57 of 59conference matches since the 2005 season. On Saturday against a tough Penn State Beaver team, which came into the match with just one loss and one tie, the Wildcats pulled out a 3-2 win in double overtime with Bullock scoring the game-winning goal. In the most recent PSUAC standings, Penn College is first. In the most recent United States Collegiate Athletic Association rankings,it is sixth.

Women's Volleyball The Wildcats put together a 4-0 week with wins over Penn State Scranton, Penn State Schuylkill, Penn State Greater Allegheny and Penn State DuBois. Kate Todorich (Mountain Top) was 36-of-36 in serves with three aces and Ashley Oswald (Altoona) had six kills and two blocks as Penn College opened its week with a three-game win over Penn State Scranton. On Wednesday, in a three-game win over Penn State Schuylkill, Lyndsey Smith (Mechanicsburg) had five aces and 18 assists, Tara Powell (Burgettstown) had 11 kills, and Todorich nine digs. On Friday, the Wildcats topped Penn State Greater Allegheny in three games as Powell had four kills and Jen DeLosa five aces. On Saturday, they stopped Penn State DuBois in four games as Smith had three aces and 28 assists, and Powell 15 kills. In the most recent PSUAC standings, Penn College is fifth. In the USCAA rankings, Penn College is 27th.

Coed TennisThe Wildcats stayed unbeaten with a 7-2 wins over Penn State Hazleton and Penn State Brandywine. Winning their singles and doubles matches in both outings were Shane Burridge (Ephrata), Brad Fisher (Montoursville) and Danielle Trout (Harrisburg). Penn College remains on top of the PSUAC standings.

Cross-Country After a week off, the men's and women's teams returned to action Saturday at the Albright Invitational in action against mostly NCAA Division III colleges and universities. Mark Cordeiro (Canton) finished first in the 8-kilometer men's race as the Wildcats placed second in an eight-team field. Cordeiro's time was 28:01. In the 6-K women's division, Abigail Schuler (Waynesboro) placed fifth in 27:31 as Penn College finished third in an eight-team field. Coach Mike Paulhamus said it was the best finish by one of his women's teams in a Division III meet during his 10 years as coach.

On the HorizonThe women's soccer team travels to NCAA Division III Susquehanna University on Tuesday. The men's soccer team has a rematch at Penn State Beaver on Saturday. The women's volleyball team has another four-match week lined up with key outings at Penn State Hazleton on Tuesday and Penn State York at home on Saturday as it seeks to be one of the eight teams qualifying for the PSUAC playoffs. Cross-country teams travel to Penn State Lehigh Valley on Saturday for their final tune-up prior to the PSUAC Championships Oct. 17. The college's golfers continue to fine tune their games during practice in preparation for the PSUAC Championships Oct. 12-13 on the Penn State Blue Course. In the most recent USCAA rankings, Penn College was No. 1 in women's soccer and No. 7 in golf.
