The Pennsylvania Housing Resource Center at Pennsylvania College of Technology and the Pennsylvania Housing Research Center at The Pennsylvania State University will sponsor a one-day "Moisture Control" workshop Nov. 8 in Valley Forge for the home-building and professional-design communities.

The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sheraton Park Ridge Hotel & Conference Center.

The session will provide systematic and comprehensive coverage of the principles of moisture control and moisture prevention for builders and remodelers, architects and engineers, vocational-technical instructors and building-codes officials.

While directed primarily at residential structures (detached and low-rise housing), the principles to be covered apply to all building enclosures on all buildings. The workshop will address how moisture problems can be avoided by understanding building-science fundamentals; the interdependence of heat, air and moisture control; the sources of moisture; the means for moisture movement; and the thresholds for performance.

The workshop will focus on the entire building enclosure, including roofing systems, walls, (above and below grade), basements and crawl spaces (vented and unvented).

Time also will be allotted for the future statewide building code and moisture-related provisions in the IRC2000 and the new PA-Alternative Energy Code developed by the PHRC.

Workshop instructors will be Eric Burnett, the Bernard and Henrietta Hankin Professor in Residential Construction at Penn State and director of the Pennsylvania Housing Research Center; John Straube, a consultant, researcher and faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering and the School of Architecture at The University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada; and Bill Van der Meer, director of the Pennsylvania Housing Resource Center at Penn College.

Cost for the workshop is $175 for PHRC members, $195 for Pennsylvania Builders Association and American Institute of Architects members and $225 for nonmembers. Lunch will be provided.

To register, call (570) 327-4768, fax to (570) 320-5239 or send mail to Pennsylvania College of Technology, PHRC-DIF 153, One College Avenue, Williamsport, PA 17701.
