Attending college directly after high school wasn't in the cards for her. But when the time was right, she dove in, tackled her fears, and came out stronger than ever.

Q&A with Tamaka

WHAT LED YOU TO PENN COLLEGE?

The location was close to home. Plus, I wanted to tackle a fear and a goal at the same time. I didn’t have an opportunity to attend college at a young age. I chose to go directly into the workforce during and after high school. When I sat down with the assistant dean to discuss the program, the process, explanation, and encouragement were all so positive. I left that meeting thinking, “Yes, I will achieve this goal.”

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF THE ATMOSPHERE HERE?

The campus community is supportive, encouraging, loving, uplifting, demanding, strong, and welcoming towards nontraditional students. The atmosphere equips students to be independent and successful, but it also makes you ready for the real world.

HOW HAVE YOU GOTTEN INVOLVED IN CAMPUS LIFE?

I am an alumnus of Phi Theta Kappa and was the treasurer of the honor society. I also joined the governance committee and am the secretary of the Black Student Union.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PENN COLLEGE COMMUNITY?

Penn College takes pride in the success of its students. While following your path, each building, student, staff, and faculty you meet will educate you, guide you, and make you feel comfortable, pushing you to a journey well worth the time, dedication, and hard work. There are many creators in the Penn College community!

HOW DID YOU BENEFIT FROM TUTORING SERVICES?

I don’t know where to begin about Tutoring Services. The first person I had as a tutor was Angie Frontz who is an amazing and inspirational encourager. I also learned that the tutoring center staff and students are just as dedicated as Angie. They all strive to make students successful. The guidance they provide will help a student with academic understanding, motivate them to think critically, and encourage them to overcome challenges to be successful in their course of study. I attended one-on-one, group, and online sessions. I recommend tutoring to all who need it and to all who may feel that they do not need it.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO DO AFTER GRADUATION?

I hope to stay connected to the Penn College community, put my degree to use while opening new opportunities, and make a positive impact helping people along a challenging and life-changing journey.

Guaranteed Momentum

"Tackle your fears. Ask questions. Gain understanding. Meet people. And utilize the many support services offered at Penn College. The transition will be challenging. But it is well worth the time and dedication!"
