Q&A with James

HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT PENN COLLEGE?

I did an internet search. I was looking to get into automotive, but wanted a four-year degree, which is uncommon in the industry!

WHAT WERE THE TOP 3 FACTORS IN YOUR DECISION TO COME TO PENN COLLEGE?

I wanted a blended, four-year program that provided both hands-on and business education. I also wanted robust student life programs. I had initially sought to become an Admissions tour guide, but instead got involved in student government. I was also looking for a college that was not too far from New York.

WERE YOU SPECIFICALLY LOOKING FOR A HANDS-ON EDUCATION?

Yes, I didn’t start getting into cars until I started driving. A lot of individuals who get into the automotive field have a close family member or friend circle that are into tinkering and working on mechanical things, but I didn’t have that so I needed a more intensive education. Originally, I had considered a mechanical engineering program, but that felt limiting to the career opportunities in the automotive Industry.

WHY DID YOU SELECT AUTOMOTIVE?

Once I started driving cars, I found that I really enjoyed going fast! They became my replacement for Legos and I found a lot of joy in repairing, maintaining, and modifying.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF OUR CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY?

I first came to campus in 2003 and was the first class to live in the Rose Street apartments. It was an awesome experience living in the suite-style room with three roommates. At the time, I was also really impressed with the automotive labs.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT POSITION?

Currently, I’m the Director of Technical Training at Subaru of America, Inc. I lead a team of about 50 individuals who strategize, design, develop, deliver, measure, recognize, appreciate, and incentivize the recruitment, retention, education and performance of Subaru Retailer Technicians. I’ve been at Subaru for nearly 18 years and started out as a Technical Training Manager, teaching technicians how to maintain, diagnose and repair Subaru vehicles. I also spent some time as the National Product Training Manager, where I led the education for Sales Consultants and Delivery Specialists through instructor-led training, driving experience, and video productions.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE COMING FROM NEW YORK AND ATTENDING A COLLEGE OUT OF STATE?

I was from Long Island, New York, so it was about a three-hour drive to campus. It was far enough to keep me from heading home on the weekends, which led me to a great social life on campus. I met a lot of lifelong friends and became really involved in student government and other activities.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR CAREER?

I still work in the automotive technology industry and get to blend the hands-on and business knowledge I learned in the classroom with the organizational, teamwork, and public speaking skills I picked up from student life. I even get to work with a few other Penn College grads!
