College teams ignore rain, shun 'Darkness'

    Penn College teams turn out for Sunday's Out of the Darkness Community Walk, concurrent to September's designation as National Suicide Awareness Month.

    Penn College comprised the largest showing at Sunday's Out of the Darkness Community Walk, helping to save lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide.

    Two teams – PCT Hope, organized by Mary R. Shuma Rudberg, director of counseling, and Katie L. Mackey, assistant director of disability and access resources; and the Wildcat men's basketball team – paid no heed to rain and joined other local residents in Montoursville's Indian Park.

    PCT Hope shattered its $250 fundraising goal, collecting nearly $1,500.

    "I was able to have several conversations with individuals that were survivors from losing loved ones from suicide," Rudberg said. "This aspect of the walk was very heartfelt and I made some friends that plan to attend Penn College's International Survivors of Suicide Day of Loss on Nov. 18. Not only are we 'PCT Hope,' we are definitely 'PCT Strong,' fighting to bring awareness and prevention to suicide."

    Projecting the very concept of "team," Wildcats turned out for a cause that hits heartbreakingly close to home. “We wanted to show our support for all families and friends who have been impacted by suicide," said coach Geoff B. Hensley (at front left, with his son). "We participated in the walk in memory of Chris Cespedes, who played basketball at Penn College from 2020-22. We all go through tough times and we will always be there for one another."
