Pre-College Program
What is an aircraft made of? What materials make the magic happen and why are they used? Dive into all things aviation at this four-day pre-college program. Get a taste of hands-on applications. Learn about composite and sheet metal materials used in the fabrication and repair of many aircraft structures. Try your hand at common repairs tackled by professional aviation mechanics like bending, forming, and riveting sheet metal. Perform preoperational inspections and learn the safety essentials of a gas turbine engine utilizing the College’s Boeing 727. Ready to test your aviation skills? Take our flight simulator for a ride. Top off the experience with a trip to the Eagles Mere Auto and Air Museum and check out an impressive collection from the golden age of flying.
Summer Overnight Pre-College Program
June 18-22, 2023
Age Group: Students entering grades 10-12
Fee: $50
Includes all activities, meals, and on-campus housing. This program includes an off-campus outing; participants will need to bring spending money for ice cream.

Aviation Workshops
Introduction to Composite Materials
Form an airfoil shape with a core material and reinforce it with composite material using industry practices.
Introduction to Sheet Metal
Design and form an airplane with aluminum materials using industry practices to experience how to cut, form, bend, and rivet sheet metal materials.
Drone Aircraft Operation
Learn the policies and procedures for safe operation of drone aircraft including an opportunity to practice on a flight simulator.

Here's how it works:
- Complete a Pre-College Program during the summer before entering 9-12 grade.
- Or better yet, come for two Pre-College Programs. Pick a different program the second time around or come for the same one twice. Each year we mix things up.
- Attend Penn College and receive $1,000 off your tuition each year if you came for one program.
- Or, get $2,000 off your tuition each year if you join us for two programs.
Ready for takeoff
In this action-packed mini-camp, students will dive into the growing opportunities in the field of aviation maintenance. During this two-day immersive experience, they'll explore all the labs within the Lumley Aviation Center. Check out the hanger packed with a fleet of college-owned aircraft. And learn what it takes to earn a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic Certificate.
