Grant to Enhance Nutrition, Physical Activity Lessons for Children

The Robert & Maureen Dunham Children’s Learning Center at Pennsylvania College of Technology received a $500 grant to enhance activities and lessons that teach children about healthy lifestyles.
“We will be using the grant to update our nutrition and physical activity policies and practices to reflect current research about best practices for young children,” said Barbara J. Albert, director of the Children’s Learning Center.
The center received the “Child Care Wellness” grant by participating in the Pennsylvania Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care. As a participant, the center will receive free professional development and consultation regarding its nutrition and physical-activity curriculum.
The accompanying grant will be used to purchase curriculum and materials to support children’s learning in those areas.
The center elected to participate in the program – administered by Tuscarora Intermediate Unit – following its recent reaccreditation through the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. That process also required a self-assessment, through which the Children’s Learning Center identified specific curricular areas that needed to be revised. Staff chose to begin by studying the center’s health policies.
The grant is funded by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services through the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The Children’s Learning Center is a Pennsylvania-licensed child care center (Keystone 4 Stars) and is accredited by the Middle States Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools and the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
The center serves students and employees whose children need high-quality, on-campus care and education while their parents work or attend classes.
