Penn College TV Program on Management Careers Wins Award

Pennsylvania College of Technology’s career-awareness series, “degrees that,” has been honored again with a Telly Award. The latest episode focusing on management careers is a bronze winner for informational programming in the 35th annual international video competition.

The 30-minute program, a joint production with WVIA Public Media, reveals the benefits of a hands-on education in achieving management status, as well as the everyday challenges and rewards of being a manager.

The episode relies on the expertise of Eric Bergstrom, who has taught leadership and management courses for Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Penn College, and the experiences of three alumni thriving in management positions: Kristi L. Ritchey, class of 2002, culinary arts technology; John G. Kouroupas, class of 2003, automotive technology management; and Samuel D. Ranck, class of 2006, business administration.

Ritchey is the executive chef and director of operations at Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop in Southern California. She’s responsible for Greenleaf restaurants in Century City, Beverly Hills and Costa Mesa. Kouroupas is one of 22 consumer experience specialists nationwide for Ford Motor Co. He monitors 15 dealerships in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware to enhance customer satisfaction. Ranck is league development manager for Little League Baseball® and director of the Little League Challenger Division®.

In addition to exploring their individual career paths and present-day duties, the episode covers management principles and offers advice on how young people can explore the possibilities of a future in management.

The program was one of approximately 12,000 Telly Award entries from all 50 states and numerous countries. The Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions, and online commercials, video and films. Past winners of Tellys include ESPN, NBC Universal, Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures Television.

Lambert, director of college information and community relations. “The Telly Award is a significant accomplishment for our Penn College/WVIA production team. It is rewarding to know that our work in developing a series devoted to education and career awareness merits recognition from this industry leader.”

The “degrees that” series is a public-service initiative that connects young people to workforce needs and rewarding career paths. Following a story-driven approach, the program highlights the technologies, educational foundation and opportunities within career clusters. Free educational materials designed for K-12 classroom use are available for each episode.

The series airs on WVIA-TV in northeastern and northcentral Pennsylvania and is available for viewing on Penn College’s YouTube channel and WVIA’s on-demandchannel. Full episodes, lesson-planning guides and supplemental information are available at the series' website. The management episode is the fifth edition of “degrees that” to receive a Telly Award.
