Alumnus Awarded Second Consecutive Industry Scholarship

A recent Pennsylvania College of Technology graduate has been awarded one of seven $5,000 scholarships from the National Association of Oil and Energy Service Professionals, the second year in a row that he was chosen.
Zachary R. Baylor, of Danville, who earned an associate degree in heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology on May 18, received a 2013 Dave Nelsen Scholarship at the trade group’s spring convention in Hershey.
To be considered for an award, each applicant was required to write a 500-word essay about goals in the oil and energy field and what appeals to him or her about the industry. Endorsement by a mentor was also part of the scholarship criteria.
"The best part about this industry is that there are many different types of heating and cooling applications out there to work on/install," wrote Baylor, employed by Eco-Air Mechanical Services, Turbotville, since he was a junior in high school. "This field never gets boring and always keeps you thinking. One of my favorite things to do is service calls; I like going out on a call where a system isn't working properly – or at all – because it really makes you think and gives you a good challenge, which makes work fun."
In addition to his degree, Baylor has amassed a number of credentials in recent years: a universal refrigeration license from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; a bronze certificate from the National Oilheat Research Alliance; and passing the Industry Competency Exam in residential air conditioning, air distribution, heat pumps, gas furnaces, oil furnaces, and light commercial air conditioning and heat.
After a few more years in the field, he aims to become certified by North American Technician Excellence Inc.
"I believe Zach Baylor will become an asset to the trade and will perform very well as he further develops his technical knowledge and skills," said Dale J. Kissinger Jr., assistant professor of HVAC technology/plumbing and heating, who endorsed Baylor’s scholarship application. "It is apparent to me that he has a dedicated interest in learning more and being able to do more within the trade. He also shares his learned knowledge and skills with others so they, too, can become more successful at the task at hand."
