Examination of the advances in science and technology allowing people across the globe to live longer. Exploration of healthcare needs for elderly consumers are examined in relation to the impact on society. Areas of focus will include: biological, psychological, social, legal and ethical concerns. In addition, discussion of the role of the nurse and other health care professionals in the care for the dying patient, as well as elderly consumer needs related to acute care, long-term care, and home nursing/community care. Emphasis placed on the teaching about disease prevention and incorporating a healthy life style, stabilization of ill consumers, as well as restorative care. Focus on information technology, as well as utilization of evidence-based practice for optimal health care delivery. 3 Credits (3 Lecture) Prerequisite(s): PSY111. (Science, Technology and Society)
